Conway's Extreme Perl talk

I had the opportunity to see the first presentation of Damian Conway's "Extreme Perl" talk last night (in Dallas, or more correctly, Irving, TX). I'd echo what's was said about Damian as a speaker after Wednesday's talk -- if you can, go see him!

But, I will even go one step farther: after last night's talk, smoke is still coming out of my ears. If you have the opportunity to see this (San Diego, for instance, or anywhere else on his lengthy tour), by all means Go! In fact, if you are confronted with the choice between seeing this talk and creating lasting peace in the Middle East, you should still go see this talk! It was THAT amazing.

You will notice I haven't actually given anything away about the content: I will hope that others who have seen/will see it will extend Damian the same courtesy and not supply any "spoilers". It is really that intense!

He mentioned this talk in Chicago, and I think he said the code itself at least should be online sometime after The Perl Conference. He didn't want to go into it with us before then, presumably to create maximum impact.

The program in question is named "selfGOL". That much, and a brief description of what it does, are in the conference documentation.

I'd recommend (re-)reading Appendix A ("Hacker Folklore") in the Jargon File before going, if you haven't read it recently.

It has little to do with "extreme programming" in the sense it is used in the books "Extreme Programming Explained" et al.

I was also at the talk in San Diego. The room was packed (picture). Several times people jumped up and applauded during the talk. it was unbelievable.
