A point was made that they don't serve any useful purpose and merely take up space

not space but time, may I say; in case it is a primitive derivatives of 'thank you' multiplied by number of comments to a given post/thread, as opposed to 'thank you, your answer was insightful, I finally understood it', applied to only one comment.
