in thread Module for 128-bit integer math?

Some of us do suffer from curiosity.

I would like a 128-bit integer math library so that I can do 128-bit integer math.

I asked "Is there a module available for doing this?". Answers include: 'yes' or 'no'

That is the beast.

"I don't know why anyone would want 128-bit integer math!" commentaries were not sought nor are they helpful.

All I saw was genuine curiosity, which I would expect when you are doing something a bit unusual. I was thinking the same thing -- what are you going to be using this for? There is a social aspect to PM!

Yeah, but if one did exist, you would want to know how to find it, right? But you didn't actually ask that. Technically, "yes" and "no" are the only answers. So offering suggestions, possibilities, and even volunteering to help -- those too were also technically not sought!?!

And how many people read this thread out of curiosity? The helpful answers likely came as a result of that! You're like a coiled snake, striking at anyone and everything! Try and relax and kick back a bit!

Oh. Just go away. Ie. Mind your own business, and I'll mind mine.

      For the record: This:

What seems strange to me is that you want more performance than you can get using any of the generic big integer modules, yet you still want to do individual integer operations in perl, as opposed to using higher level functions written in C, such as a cryptographic library or a library for numerical vectors.

is not "curiosity". it is erroneously assumptive--I never mentioned "performance", nor "cryptography"; nor "numerical vectors"(whatever they are!!!).--, crassly presumptive, and prematurely judgemental.

I thought I remembered seeing a 128-bit integer library, but when I went looking for it, I couldn't find it. So I asked if anyone knew of it. Full f**ing stop.

The above paragraph turns idle curiosity into puerile judgementalism.

And your intervention is nothing more than opportunistic bandwagon riding. Your pseudo-psychoanalysis via the internet has the same merit as those charlatans that claim to speak to the dead.

I am perfectly capable at deciding how I want to expend my intellectual energies. Perfectly adept at judging the technical merits of fixed-width integer operations versus arbitrary precision. And perfectly capable of deciding for myself whether I wish to use this place as an extension of my social life, or as a technical resource.

To summarise. Stuff that in your pipe and smoke on it.

Did I imagine it, or does it exist somewhere?

The interesting thing is that if someone knows of such a module then you would like to know more information than you asked for -- i.e. the name and how to get your hands on it. But when someone responds in way you do not like, you slam them for providing more information than you asked for. See the contradiction?

I saw ambrus's post as divided into three parts. The first was obvious curiosity. The second was more like rambling/talking out loud to oneself, so still about curiosity. The last part mentioned various modules and seemed to support the conclusion that there is nothing worth looking at out there (your "no" answer).

Maybe your interpretation is correct, but what do you gain by responding in such a negative way? Especially when your interpretation is wrong? That's why I used the snake analogy. Seems like you always go the negative route, assuming the worst, always the one trying to pick a fight.

Also, this is a public forum. No one here is paid to answer your question. Many of us like to hang out and kick back a bit. So it's perfectly fine to ask something like "Hey, I'm curious, what do you plan on doing with this? It sounds interesting!" I actually checked this thread out because you usually ask interesting questions, and this one would be even more interesting if you had included what you were trying to do with it (even if it is doing it for the sake of doing it). Curiosity is a good trait at a site geared towards learning.

Again, my take on ambrus' post is imo pretty much pure curiosity. Or if you will, since you did not mention why you wanted to do it, we were left with a puzzle or a mystery to solve, and he was running through some of the possibilities, and discarding some for reasons given -- like I said, as if he was talking through his thought process out loud.

Update: Made some significant changes, such as bringing the blockquotes in, etc. General sentiment is the same.
