    I don't suggest Polls because:
    • I program; who has the time?
    • I have a life; who has the time?
    • I'm looking for work; who has the time?
    • I drink, therefore I am.
    • Too busy learning Python.
    • Too busy learning Perl 6.
    • Every original poll has already been suggested!
    • Perl Monks shouldn't be so frivolous as to have polls.
    • My poll suggesting soul has been crushed by the weight of repeated rejection.
    • I can suggest a poll?
    • What's a Poll?

Revised: My thanks and regrets to mikeraz for his crushed soul...

      • "Every original poll has already been suggested!"

...but I can't think of an original one either :(

Re: poll ideas quest 2011 (Prince and Pauper)
by ambrus (Abbot) on Jan 06, 2011 at 20:03 UTC

If I were the Pauper who found the security hole that allows privilege escalation, I'd…

    • Return the throne to the Prince: it's ethical
    • Return the throne to the Prince: the truth would get out eventually
    • Return the throne to the Prince: being King's Ward is better than being King
    • Keep the throne, see to that the Prince is treated well
    • Keep the throne, change rules to close hole from other look-alikes – Update 2010-01-09: delete this option, it's not orthogonal enough
    • Keep the throne, abandon the Prince
    • Keep the throne, meet the Prince privately and laugh in his face
    • Keep the throne, have the Prince killed

Update: was done in 2013 as If I were the Pauper who found a security hole that allows privilege escalation, I'd …

      • Hand the throne over to the best-paying villain: ethics are overrated
(and hope that this villain lets me live long enough to enjoy my price ;-)
Hand the throne over to the best-paying villain: ethics are overrated

How'd you convince the Archbishop to crown that villain?

      • Return the throne to the Prince: it's ethical
      • Return the throne to the Prince: the truth would get out eventually
      • Return the throne to the Prince: being King's Ward is better than being King
      • Keep the throne, see to that the Prince is treated well
      • Keep the throne, abandon the Prince
      • Keep the throne, meet the Prince privately and laugh in his face
      • Keep the throne, have the Prince killed
      • Return the throne to the Prince: it's ethical
      • Fill the throne to capacity, and clog with a towel
Keep the throne, turn kingdom into sinful spam depot by corrupting the local mail d(a)emon.
Ewww, that last option is the most evil of all.

If the universe was more like perl, i would...
    • use More::Beer;
    • require 'Payment';
    • eval($girlfriend);
    • goto "vacation";
    • chop $Someones->Head('Off');
    • split(/\ /, "me girlfriend");
    • join(' ', 'me', 'party');
    • new Car(size=>'big',speed=>'fast');

/me applauds. What a great poll idea!

      Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn

Now that is a great poll! It will be hard to choose ... only the split-option is a non-option :-)

/me bows humbly before cavac and praises him.
      Just Great..

Re: poll ideas quest 2011 (pencil or coin to show photo scale)
by ambrus (Abbot) on Jan 30, 2011 at 19:30 UTC

The best object to provide scale on a photo showing a small object is…

    • Pencil
    • Pen
    • Coin
    • Ruler
    • Credit card
    • CD
    • Floppy disk
    • Matches
    • Door key
    • Keyboard
    • Thimble
    • Teddy bear
    • Drinking glass
    • Human hand or finger

Update: maybe there should be a "tennis ball" or "table tennis ball" option too?

    Update 2011-02-25: added matches.

Update 2011-04-27: done in The best object to provide scale on a photo showing a small object is:.

      • Clownshoes
Door Key sounds to dorky. Use "House Key" instead.

Too late. This poll has already went live, and the poll is linked form my suggestion node.

However, thanks for the grammar tip. I'll try to remember it in the future.

    Node 1000000 will be:

    • The return of paco!
    • A 'Perl is dead' style rant.
    • A homework question.
    • The homenode of our new overlord.
    • Announcement that Perl 6 is "ready".
    • Something else (please specify).

Update: changed node number to 1000000 from 900000, which crept up quickly.

      • never created (due to some obscure 6-digit-node-number-limitation well hidden in the PerlMonks-code)

      great poll, btw!

      • A fart in your general direction
Re: poll ideas quest 2011 - world without Perl
by Ratazong (Monsignor) on Feb 10, 2011 at 21:38 UTC

In a dark parallel universe, where Perl was never invented, I would write my programs

    • in c (k&r-style, of course)
    • in java - I want to be on the winner-side of the tiobe index once
    • as unix shell scripts, using lots of calls to grep and awk
    • in php, python or any other programming language starting with 'p'
    • in c++ ... but I would miss moose on every keystroke
    • in cobol, however probably not out of my free will
    • in lisp ... now there is no excuse left not to learn it
    • using ancient runes
    • in another programming language
    • if I can't have Perl I'd rather not program at all...

If Perl was never invented, PHP, Ruby and Python either wouldn't exist or would be quite different from their current manifestations (due to being influenced by Perl to varying degrees).

    • Hanging out at
    • Browsing the CPAN
    • Hacking the Perl source code

by ambrus (Abbot) on Feb 10, 2011 at 15:05 UTC

      I can drive…

      • An airplane
      • A helicopter
      • A train
      • An ambulance van
      • A metro
      • A bus
      • A tram
      • A truck
      • Both on the left and on the right
      • A motorbike
      • A van
      • A car
      • A car if I'm forced to
      • None of the above
        • A wheelchair
        • Someone nuts

        Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn
++ .... but begs to allow multiple selections!

Just choose the topmost one that applies to you. Anyone who can drive a bus can probably also drive a truck and a car too.

        • Anything with wheels
        • Anything with tracks
        • Damn near anything that moves
I can also drive my cow-orkers insane... :-0

Peter L. Berghold -- Unix Professional
Peter -at- Berghold -dot- Net; AOL IM redcowdawg Yahoo IM: blue_cowdawg
metro/train no difference, bus/truck/van/ambulane/car no difference
        • Space shuttle
        • Jetpack

Most people who drive cars can't just jump behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer truck, so maybe truck/bus needs to be separate from car/van/ambulance. Heck, come to think of it, my wife struggles to drive our van but is hell on wheels in our car.

Which is your favorite cpan perl module you use?

    • use DBI;
    • use CGI;
    • use Log::Simplest;
    • use Time::HiRes
    • use GD;
    • use SNMP;
    • use Daemon::Simple;
    • use LWP::Curl;
    • use Carp;
          I second XML::Simple.
        * use Data::Dumper;

Re: poll ideas quest 2011 (stuffed toy)
by ambrus (Abbot) on Feb 03, 2011 at 11:16 UTC

My favourite stuffed toy is a(n)…

      • Monkey or ape
      • Horse or donkey
      • Unicorn or My Little Pony
      • Giraffe
      • Pig
      • (Update: added) Cow
      • Elephant
      • (Update: added) Camel, onion, ogre, oyster or other Perl mascot
      • Cat or other feline
      • Dog
      • Bear or koala
      • Rabbit
      • Kangaroo
      • Duck
      • Other bird
      • Snake or serpent
      • Crocodile
      • Fish
      • Octopus
      • Worm
      • Plant
      • Microbe
      • Car
      • Human animal (I'm from the Planet of the Apes)
      • Human person

Notes: giraffe is included for castaway, octopus for Dominus.

Update: I know this isn't complete, eg. I used to have a white stuffed seal, but listing all animals would be ugly.

Update 2012-03-30: changed "stuffed animal toy" to "stuffed toy" in poll title, because some of the answers aren't animals. Thanks for the suggestion to Arunbear. Also duplicated the human option accordingly.

Update 2012-05-05: done: My favourite stuffed toy is a(n)….

I guess all the penguin lovers will have to go for "Other bird", eh? :)
some of these animals aren't really animals e.g. oyster, onion, Plant, Microbe and Car - so the list could be trimmed down (unless they are listed for humour?).

Yes, some of those aren't animals. I'll try to think of what should be done with that. Maybe they should be removed, or the question rephrased somehow. Maybe there should be a "none" option, and also an "other animal" option.

The best simile for doing X "without using modules" is:
      • like searching for your keys "without using eyes"
      • like doing your shopping "without using money"
      • like driving into town "without using the gas pedal"
      • like unlocking a cell door "without using the key"
      • like consuming a meal "without using your mouth"
      • like shooting yourself in the foot "without using a gun"
        • Removing a screw without a matching screwdriver
like posting a question "without doing the research"

In the books of Jules Verne, the protagonist with the most questionable ethics is…

      • Doctor Antekirtt
      • President Barbicane
      • Ilia Brusch (from the Danube Pilot)
      • Phileas Fogg
      • Captain Hatteras
      • Kéraban the Inflexible
      • Professor Liedenbrock
      • Captain Nemo
      • Hector Servadac
      • Zephyrin Xirdal (from the Chase of the Golden Meteor)

Maybe I should add Captain Nemo, but he does not count as a protagonist. Feel free to suggest any others too.

Update 2012-11-22: added Nemo, who cares if he's not a protagonist.

Vampires are immortal, which means the only way to kill them is…

      • A silver bullet
      • A stake through their heart
      • Bright light
      • Garlic
      • Holy water
      • Holy wafers sewn in their mouth (Update 2015-11-23)
      • A chainsaw
      • Cutting their supply of blood
      • The crow of a rooster
      • Water
      • Fire
      • Magic
      • In their bat form
      • By accident
      • Killing their elders first
      • Making them pop culture icons (Update 2011-03-22: added this, thank you for the idea, apl)

Update 2015-02-11: see SMBC comic about trolls and sunlight.

        • Make them pop culture icons

The most important thing I have ever forgotten to do because I was writing code was:

      • Take out the trash
      • Clean my house/apartment/cave
      • Eat dinner
      • Take the turkey out of the oven
      • Sleep (for at least 2 consecutive days)
      • Show up for my DnD game (player)
      • Show up for my DnD game (DM)
      • Pick up my car from the repair shop (oops)
      • Show up for work (lame job)
      • Show up for work (programming job)
      • Show up for work (Self-employed)
      • Show up for unemployment benefits meeting
      • Show up for court
      • Show up to a first date
      • Show up to my Sister's/Brothers wedding
      • Show up to a wedding where I am the best man/maid of honor
      • Show up to my wedding
      • Get an appendectomy
      • Get a root canal
      • Take a final exam
      • Graduate from college/graduate school/correspondence school from the back of Popular Science
      • Answer this stupid poll

        • Get a real life!

That's an option suggestion, not a dagger in your back ... but it's probably too sad to actually include in a poll.

      I have my hair cut…

      • More than once every day
      • Every day
      • Every other day
      • Twice a week
      • Every week
      • Every other week
      • Every month
      • Eight times a year
      • Six times a year
      • Four times a year
      • Three times a year
      • Twice a year
      • Every year
      • Once every few years
      • Never, I just let it grow
      • Never, I have my super powers in my hair
      • Never, no hair grows on my head

Update: Is this insulting or something? Does it read like “your hair looks ugly”?

Your update makes me add my option: "Whenever my wife says my hair needs a cut"

        Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn

I was wondering how often polls were cycled. A quick search for "poll frequency" only resulted in this node (and the Rebel with a Cause AM's response).

        ++ for reminding me I need a haircut. :-)

I don't think there's anything insulting here. The handful of downvotes probably just reflect a lack of interest in a fairly mundane topic. Nonetheless, I suspect this poll might generate a plethora of humorous responses.

        -- Ken

Polls are usually cycled every months nowadays. See Past Polls for a listing of the dates in the past.

Since it's come up lately a lot on the forums... here's a Poll for what would be a bunch of new names for Perl 6...
Other Alternative names for Perl 6...
      • Perl++ - As C is to C++, so are the days of our lives.
      • Pirl - The next vowell after "e", same pronounciation...
      • Lerp - Kinda like Larping...
      • Perlex - Perl's Ex Lover...
      • Perlican - Pelican, hey it's an animal.
      • Perlium - Sounds like a newly discovered element on the periodic table.
      • Pern - Mascot could be a dragon, might get sued by Anne MacCaffrey...

I believe that there are elections coming up in 2012. There certainly will be in Europe if the Euro collapses. So:

The voting system where I live is best described as:

    • Patrician (he's the one man, he has the one vote)
    • Communism (your vote doesn't count)
    • Democratic (your vote counts)
    • Feudal (your Count votes)
    • Florida (can't count votes)
    • Chicago (vote early, vote often)

      John Davies

        • Democratic - eastern Europe variant (if you vote for the wrong party, your vote will be corrected before being counted)
Can't think of a good name for "how much for a vote?"

        ROFL. Feudal vs Democratic. Brilliant!

      • do the Microsoft dance and hope nobody will ever find out
      • do the Sony dance, pull the plug for two solid months and hope the customers wont notice
      • do the Seagate dance, release some half-arsed update and hope it wont kill the customers data
      • do the IRC dance, flamewar everyone off the channel and hope nobody will blame me for the real problem
      • do the Perlmonks dance, write a workaround Acme:: module and hope nobody else will ever use it

poll ideas quest 2011: underrated nodes
by Ratazong (Monsignor) on May 13, 2011 at 08:17 UTC

      Dear Monks!

Recently I stumbeld over a really great node, which only got one (up)vote. And there are probably hundreds of hidden gems, which are now nearly forgotten. So I propose the following poll to promote them and to blow away some dust from them.

The most underrated node of all time is

btw.: I am more interested in the discussion on the poll than the results itself - I expect to find many great nodes that way - and many that are not in the Selected Best Nodes-list.

        > I am more interested in the discussion on the poll than the results itself

Seriously... I was pondering about a weighted search, which tries to compensate negative conditions.

For instance if "Re^3"s posted 3 AM on a Sunday 10 days after the OP get only 10 % of the votes of the average votes of a "Re^1" at the same time should be weighted with factor 10. (hope you get the basic idea)

Another approach could take care about subjective tastes by searching nodes upvoted by monks whose votes correlate with your own votes. But this could only be realized with free access to the DB.

        Cheers Rolf

The greatest source of my XP is:

    • Lesser mortals enthusiastically upvoting my brilliant, insightful and helpful nodes.
    • Reluctantly upvoting the barely acceptable nodes of lesser mortals.
    • Downvoting the wretched stuff that appears so often.
    • The bonus for using all my votes.
    • 2 points occasionally for just logging in.
    • I'm an anonymonk because I don't believe in XP.
    • I'm an anonymonk for other reasons.
    • Penance required.
    • What's XP?

Additional options for "The greatest source of my XP is:"
        • some misterious bug in the perlmonks code (of course I won't tell anyone ;-)
        • managing fake-identities to upvote my own nodes (somehow I have to compensate that noone else does it!)
        • searching for and then upvoting all nodes written by davies, including this poll

When I have to take notes I ...
      • Open VI and save it to /home/$USER/ideas
      • Fire up Emacs and run a macro for note-taking
      • Pull out a pad of paper and Pen
      • Pull out a pad of paper and Mechanical Pencil
      • Pull out an unsharpened wooden pencil, and quest for a sharpener; if found, sharpen pencil and jot down note; else forget
      • Dictate to smart phone
      • Dictate to computer
      • Pull out cassette recorder... and record note.
      • Scribble on a post-it (and place it with care)
      • Type into an electronic Post-it note
      • Personal Wiki (for posterity)
      • Public Wiki (somehow)
      • Text yourself
      • Email yourself
      • Tweet (the world should have my notes: bit by bit)
      • Notes are unnecessary
      (updated: slashes correct now)
        • Take the nearest thing that writes (pen, pencil, feltliner, ...) and grab the closest sheet to write on (printed mail, listing, book, earlier note, notebook, agenda, ...) that still has enough room to take the note and hope the note won't get lost in the rumble on the desk.

Re: poll ideas quest 2011 (modern household appliances)
by ambrus (Abbot) on Dec 06, 2011 at 10:23 UTC

I can't imagine how I could ever live without an…

      • Electrically adjustable table
      • Hair iron
      • Electric razor
      • Electric toothbrush
      • Electric pencil sharpener or can opener
      • Electric garage door
      • Electronic thermometer or blood pressure meter
      • Parking sensor
      • Electric clothes dryer
      • Electric kettle
      • Coffee machine
      • Dishwasher
      • Microwave oven
      • Bread maker
      • Electric griddle
      • Barbecue grill
      • Electric or induction stove
      • Electric oven

If you think there are too few options, you may add some of the following older appliances too. That's not likely though, you'd rather want to remove some of the options above instead.

      • Immersion heater
      • Hairdryer
      • Toaster
      • Vacuum cleaner
      • Washing machine
      • Freezer
      • Fridge

What I include are household appliances, that is, stuff ordinary people can own at home. Thus, the automatic toilet flush didn't make the cut.

I'm deliberately leaving out all the innovations related to advanced consumer electronics such as: television, color television, cassette player, videocassette recorder, CD player, personal computer, home game computer, portable game computer, internet, perl, mobile phone, internet access at home, fast computer at home, computer with large hard disk at home, cd/dvd burner, fast internet access at home, portable audio cd player, cheap solid state storage, portable music player using solid state storage, digital camera, mobile internet, camera in mobile phone, cheap GPS, large television, large TFT monitor, wireless keyboard or mouse, notebook computer as powerful as a desktop, touchscreen mobile phone, uninterruptible power supply, facebook, twitter. Those could make another poll, but a less interesting one.

I'm also omitting stuff related to light sources, such as led bicycle torch, cheap rechargeable battery. See the related Re: poll ideas quest 2009 (light source).

Update 2015-07-10: added electrically adjustable table, electric can opener next to pencil sharpener, merged thermometer and blood pressure meter, demoted immersion heater to the extras. See also the other idea Re: poll ideas quest 2010 (Past sucks why) "If I moved to the Past, what I missed the most would be…"

        • electric seat adjusters in the car

Hmm, maybe the car extras should separated (from the in-house appliances) to another poll, with items like this (this list is incomplete).

          I can't imagine how I could ever drive a car without…

          • Power-assisted brakes
          • ABS
          • Radio and cassette player
          • CD player
          • Power-assisted steering wheel
          • Airbags
          • Rear window heating
          • Air conditioning
          • A lamp in the trunk
          • Electrically adjustable mirrors
          • Electric windows
          • Mobile phone loudspeaker
          • Radio and mobile phone controls next to the steering wheel
          • Parking sensors
          • Electric seat adjuster
          • Parking cameras
          • GPS
          • Electronic cruise control system
What, no gas stove in the list? Really, I say!

A program should be light and agile, its subroutines connected like a string of pearls. The spirit and intent of the program should be retained throughout. There should be neither too little or too much, neither needless loops nor useless variables, neither lack of structure nor overwhelming rigidity." - The Tao of Programming, 4.1 - Geoffrey James

Sorry, but I considered the gas stove as something that has always existed, just like the gas water heaters, fridges, washing machines, cars, motorbikes, radio, television, electric chandeliers, etc. Maybe I'm too young. I admit I might also be inconsistent in what I consider as old and what as new.

        • Hair iron no idea what this even is
        • Electric razor don't have one
        • Electric toothbrush don't have one
        • Electric pencil sharpener don't have one
        • Electric garage door don't have a garage, or a car
        • Electronic thermometer don't have one
        • Electronic blood pressure meter don't have one
        • Parking sensor don't have one
        • Electric clothes dryer don't have one
        • Electric kettle do have one, but could make do without... just use the stove
        • Immersion heater don't have one
        • Coffee machine don't have one
        • Dishwasher don't have one
        • Microwave oven don't have one
        • Bread maker don't have one
        • Electric griddle don't have one
        • Barbecue grill don't have one
        • Electric or induction stove don't have one
        • Electric oven do have one, but would prefer gas
I think I could quite easily live without all the items on your list, and already do live without most of them. Fridge, freezer and washing machine I wouldn't want to do without though.
Hair iron: no idea what this even is

Used by girls to make their long hair wavy. Thus, most people won't ever use one, and some of those who do use it only at the hairdressers', so they don't own one at home.

Electric oven do have one, but would prefer gas

Some do, yes. Some prefer electric/induction because it's easier to clean.

The best video card brand is…

      • ATI/AMD
      • Intel
      • Nvidia

I'm not sure I like this poll. My first reaction was "The question should be: The worst video card brand is ...", but on either question, a flame-war is likely to happen.

On personal experience, I'f found that it also really matters if the card is used in a laptop (I prefer ATI) or in a desktop (I don't really care).

Love based drunkenness would probably confuse the issue, though the poll is about the degree of drunkenness rather than the source of it.

      • at my computer
      • outside
      • on the bus/train/subway/tram
      • in the lavatory
      • whenever & wherever

I'm curious, so many different habits here. Are these options any good?

      Edit: Added train/subway/tram

I hate reading in the sense that is proposed in this poll. I like to "read" books in the form of audio-books. Does that count? In that case: "In my car"

To me, reading is a comfortable exercise that i am in control of. Listening, is also getting the information, but is an entirely different mood.
Before moving to the town, I did most of my reading on a train. Much more comfortable than a bus.
