Perl and Netcool

chumley has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Just a quick question:

Has anyone used Perl with Netcool? I have a few projects that would work well with Perl, I think - such as creating trouble tickets that will be entered in Remedy.

Netcool uses their own database, and I haven't seen a DBI driver for it. I've thought of writing one but I'm a beginner at object-oriented Perl, and I've only read about the DBI - never used it. Of course that's a good reason to write it, just to learn how. :-)

Let me start by saying that I have not written any Perl based interfaces for Netcool. Having said that, from the Netcool site: "NETCOOL/SDK PROBE API™: Designed for partners wishing to develop their own integration from scratch, the Netcool Probe API delivers a complete library of functions, callable from C, the describe access to the Netcool ObjectServer. The Netcool Probe Developers API delivers the same technology that standard Netcool/OMNIbus Probes use, enabling developers to build probes that share the same interface and basic functionality." Also: "Netcool Integration Module: Any event information on the Netcool ObjectServer that surpasses a pre-determined threshold is passed to the AlarmPoint Perl Client and sent to the AlarmPoint server. " And from a Netcool users group (Netcoolusers): "GOmnilist is an open-source Gnome/GTK+ based event-list for Netcool/OMNIbus. At the moment it is under heavy development but will eventually evolve to a funky alternative to the X/Motif (yuck) based event-list. BTW, it's also free. It's written in C, C++ and Perl; but I'm going to be stripping out the Perl code and rewriting it in C++ as soon as I get documentation for the Open Client libraries." I've looked at the GOmnilist a little bit. We're using the standard NT and Unix event lists, and they work well for our needs. The problem with the SDK is the cost. What I'm looking for is a way to access the database, with more flexibility thatn I get from the event list and admin tools. Thanks. Chumley	[reply]
