best module for PDF creation?

cLive ;-) has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Thought I'd have a play with PDF creation. Searched the monastry, found a couple of useful articles. Searched CPAN, found 8 PDF related modules/module sets.

Has anyone gone for a long walk down this path? If so, what were your experiences, and what module(s) do you recommend?

Thoughts appreciated.

My company wrote a good sitelet for a pretty large company using pdflib. We started this project back over 2 1/2 years ago so the pdf options in Perl were few and far between so we stuck with it. I think there's more information on perl.com and cpan.org ... Search cpan.org here. Back when we started using pdflib it was free, well it's not anymore and that's why we haven't upgraded. If the client would want more capability or just want upgrade in the future, I'll probably be in the same boat you are, but as for now pdflib did the job for us for free. Good luck with your search. Looks fun, but I'm looking for something to embed in a cross platform system, so need to use perl, not C. A bit more research is leading me towards Text::PDF::API. This seems to be a large project, and I think Fredo could do with some English help, so it might be a good place to pitch in Hmmm. Anyone played with this module in particular? cLive ;-)	[reply]

I don't have a module to recommend, but I will recommend a book, Thinking in Postscript by Glenn Reid, available here (cheap if you use Windows, free for Mac users): adamsj They laughed at Joan of Arc, but she went right ahead and built it. --Gracie Allen	[reply]

I just completed a report-writer contract company written in PDF::Create. The interface was okay, and did what I wanted. But I was dealing almost entirely with text. Just tinkering around with the module trying to do some rudimenary graphics I got frustrated with a lack of features in the API. YMMV.	[reply]
