I would have a look at this articles: CGI Programming. I'm surprised somebody has not come down on you with a very large RTFM. Actually I think I guess where you're coming from. You've rented some space on a fairly basic web server and you cannot work out how to get it going. I've been there. Sadly it all varies from company to company rather too much. So basically my advice would be to start very simple. Also search for advice on google using the name of your hosting provider. Also look round your file system on the webserver to find the cgi-bin directory. There should be a working test script of some sort there.
