I like to use something like this: 
my @BGColors = ('#dddddd', '#ffffff');

for (1..10){ # As you loop through a database query result or somethin

  print qq{
    <tr bgcolor="$BGColors[$flip = !$flip]">
      <td>$_</td>
    </tr>
  };
}
