Probably not a bad idea, as it would generate a lot of nice code around the monastery, but I think I might see a couple potential problems.
A lot of people work for companies that seriously restrict how much their employees are able to show/talk about outside of the workplace. Often, some of the best mods people create are designed for a project they work on at their job. Forcing monks to display some sort of special post might seriously hinder these people as they'd have to take extra time (away from their normal work) to generate a special post to be deemed a saint.
Frankly, I think people often associate someone's XP level with their knowledge of Perl. Granted, I'm sure merlyn who, at the time of this post, has 13525 XP, knows a little something about Perl. However, I believe that someone's XP value really displays a combintaion of two things (possibly more) about a monk: 1. their knowledge of Perl and 2. their willingness to contribute to Perlmonks. After all, you can really contribute a lot to Perlmonks without knowing a whole lot about Perl.
You can:
- Write book reviews
- Answer a lot of the "newbie" questions to keep them out of the other saints' hair
- Post good meditations or discussions
- Write tutorials on various mods/techniques
The list of things someone can do without knowing a whole lot about Perl really goes on an awfully long way. I'm sure others can come up with lots more ways they contributed to Perlmonks before they really knew a lot about Perl.
I guess what I'm trying to get at is the fact that someone that's a Saint doesn't necessarily know more about Perl than someone who's not (although that's probably a common and likely assumption). Therefore, I don't really think people should have to contribute something extra to Perlmonks to become a Saint, in order to get to that point, they've already had to contribute an awful lot.
There's my two cents, anyway.

Skepticism is the source of knowledge as much as knowledge is the source of skepticism. | [reply] |
I really like this Idea.
Here in France a lot of craftsman at the end of their study,
join a contest where they have to produce their 'Masterpiece'.
(And I do believe that in a sense we are a kind of craftsman,
polishing our skills, loving our art...)
More than the contest in itself, I like the Idea of a 'Masterpiece' that show your works, creativity...
(think about Erudil Camel, japhy production about regex(soon a book!!), BooK obfuscates...).
(I know book isn't a Saint but some of his obfuscates really deserve the 'Masterpiece' title...)
It could only be a good thing that will make Saints wanabee (even) more willingly to enhance and contribute to the monastery.
Not to become a Saint but mostly to be recognized by other Saints.
I know Saints usually tend to oppose to new levels,
But I can't imagine why they wouldn't accept to make us this gift :
Recognition by admired Saints...
I really hope that something will come out of this Idea...
(Even if it means more work for you beloved Saints ;-p )
