A sad day comes...

by Ovid (Cardinal)
on Apr 26, 2001 at 23:35 UTC ( [id://75878]=perlmeditation: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

I recently checked out Best Nodes and saw that lhoward's beautiful Shift, Pop, Unshift and Push with Impunity! is now last on the list of Best Nodes of all time. This wonderful node was posted 6 days after I created an account here and was, for the longest time, the top node of all time. Now, with one more "good post", this node will be off the list and runs the risk of fading into obscurity

What do monks think about creating a "classic nodes" page? Perhaps this is merely a nostalgic thought on my part (nostalgia? I've not even been here a year!), but I think it would be nice to have an area where such nodes can be archived, irrespective of their reputation. Do any monks remember the debates that raged over this post by merlyn (or why the node isn't quite what it was)? Perhaps on a more positive note, his Schwartzian Transform and the discussion that follows may fall in such a category. Another example: Why I like Functional Programming by tilly falls in this category, too. And let's not forget virtually everything that Erudil has posted :)

If we like this idea, the tough issues:

  • Would this be a post? I like the idea of another section, but perhaps we have too many.
  • If it is another section, does vroom have the time to put it together?
  • How do we choose? This is the biggy. Perhaps nominations and then votes?
  • How would new items get added in the future?

Cheers,
Ovid

Update 1: I was ambivalent about including the link to one of merlyn's more infamous posts. I didn't do that to rub salt in old wounds. I mentioned it due to the impact it had on the community at the time. It was a very polarizing post that sparked a huge amount of discussion. I still remember losing my temper and lashing out at another monk in the CB. My tongue could have clipped a hedge. The impact that the post had is the reason why I view it as a classic node.

Update 2: It appears that, due to this post, lhoward's post will survive a bit longer in the Best Nodes of All Time list :)

One idea: Give each user a "personal Hall of Fame nodelet" which they can drop any node they feel is worthy of such into it. A HoF page then would list, in order how many users have that node as a HoF, those nodes. While it might be useful for others to see what other nodes have been selected as HoF, this could lead down the path of bad vibes if abused. Of course, the programming isn't trivial.

In the meantime, I'd suggest just keeping such bookmarks in the personal nodelet or on your homepage, and make sure that you tell ppl that you are keeping such.

I like the idea, but it would take some strict rules to make it work. I think the standard for entry should be very high. Something like it needs to be nominated by a high level monk, has to have existed for more than 6 months and then needs to be voted on for entry by 10 high level monks - maybe even just saints. With that sort of standard, we can be sure it's good stuff.

Best Nodes is really going to suffer as we go on in terms of the number of voters and votes being cast. Nodes like the ones you mention will be crowded out not because they're no longer deserving, but because when they first hit and were voted on a ++ from _every_ monk couldn't have made the rep as high as a ++ from 50% of the current community.

This is one of the many things that I think a wiki would be ideal for.

Last I heard vroom's wiki implementation still needed better permission denied messages, executive decisions on who can create them, and a few shortcuts from jcwren need to be added. This was a few days ago.

Where a wiki beats the current system (IMHO) is for the development and maintainance of content that is useful for the whole community. Things like your proposed classic nodes, FAQs, introductory documentation, tutorials...

The current system is (IMHO) much better for discussion, question and answer sessions, etc.

So the wiki would be a very small portion of the overall site. However it would be best for a very valuable portion of the site...

I also noticed that you can reply to a wiki node if you know what you are doing (sort of "security through obscurity") -- well, there might be a security check at the tail end of the process since I didn't commit my reply due to the current state of things.

I think it's a wonderful idea! We could take a 'Best Node' item that has been up there for a minimum pre-determined amount of time and place it in the 'Classic Nodes' list once it falls off the 'Best Nodes' list.

Best Nodes is part of a list of Nodes. Simply a specified number of Nodes that fullfill the criteria to be he first ones in that list.
Worst Nodes is a result from the same list, but these are the latter ones.

So All Nodes sorted by reputation, posting date or authors name or whatever might be the name of the list where both above are taken from.

So let me see and sort that list as I like to and Erudils Nodes might be in there among the the top 50 forever.
Beside that I think as some nodes from discussions are not strict perl related we might have to consider what we put in our LIBRARY. Only the best or most helpfull and instructive nodes about perl or so.
But I agree. I was like getting sad when I've seen Erudil's There can be only one! goin down and down.

    Have a nice day
All decision is left to your taste
