Which version of Perl are you using? With 5.010, I get

   global_variable = IT'S WORKING FINE at ...

which is just what I expect.

...same here (with 5.10.0), but with 5.8.8 I can reproduce the problem. (In both cases, the Error version is 0.17015.)	[reply]

I cannot reproduce the problem. Not with 5.8.8. Not with 5.8.9. And not with 5.6.2. In each case, Error version is 0.17015.	[reply]
