Can we make it less work to generate Newest Nodes?

I don't usually hit Newest Nodes, but I did today, and was shocked to see

Showing nodes created since Aug 06, 2008 at 17:02
The poor web site had to scramble through almost six month's worth of stuff to generate my page. Yikes.

Would it make sense to limit that to, say, one or two months?

Did you actually get that much stuff on the page? The discussion on Newest Nodes length limit seems to imply this was already throttled. Maybe it said it would show you six months of stuff and then didn't?

Indeed, I just set my mark to somewhere in 2005 and it only took several seconds for the page to load and it only included nodes going back to the end of last November (60 days, yes 2008).

The page did note "Skipping huge list of notes" but otherwise gave no clear indication that it wasn't actually doing as it said, "Showing nodes created since 2005‑11‑21 ...".

So whoever in pmdev can feel free to add some type of notice for this situation. Otherwise, it worked quite well and as designed.

Maybe you should clear your last read time? I only get a day or two's worth of nodes and when I click more settings it says, "Your 'last checked' time is not set. Newest Nodes will show you nodes created during the preceding 24 hours."

Yes, of course. :) I know that. But I'm concerned that if I forget (which I appear to have done), that the web server will serve up six months worth of stuff. There's no way I could read all of those nodes. Even a month's worth would be a pile of stuff to get through.

That is why I no longer mark Newest Nodes read. What I find is that I go through brief periods when I have time to respond and would find that helpful. Then I won't be around for a week. And get overwhelmed.

What I would really like is to be able to look at all nodes for a given time period, then move to the next, the one after that, and so on. But missing that, just looking at the last day is good enough for me.

... just looking at the last day is good enough for me.

Me too. In fact, I normally visit Newest Nodes with my Newest Nodes Settings adjusted so that my "'last checked' time is not set. Newest Nodes will show you nodes created during the preceding 24 hours." This way, I get a pull-down menu at the top of the Newest Nodes page where I can set how many days back I want to see (but I usually just go with the default 1-day setting).

Of course, the Recent Threads page is far superior, and I really should be using that more.

In any case, I agree it might be cool to be able to get something like the Newest Nodes style listing for any given date or (brief) date range. Not even Super Search seems to support that sort of access. But then again, I don't expect that this sort of search would really be needed very often.

I believe that can be accomplished through RAT, you see each days activity
When I look at Recently Active Threads I don't see the functionality you describe. And I don't see the ability to go back more than 3 days.

I could easily be missing something though.
