How do you regularly express "regular expressions"?

Communication is weird. Communication, when one party has no idea what the other means, is weirder. Everyone (well, maybe not everyone) I meet has a different way of saying the phrase 'regular expressions'. How do you?

    • Regular expressions
    • Regex
    • Regexes
    • Regexp
    • Regexps
    • Regexen
    • Patterns
    • Rules
    • Line noise
    • The wrong way
    • Other (for the sake of completeness)

I pronounce them 'regex' with a soft g (as in "Lawliet is a prodigy"). I didn't include the letter pronunciation because it would take up too much room (~15 options) and I think I meant this to be communicating online, not in real life. Although, maybe another poll could be how you say them aloud ;D

And you didn't even know bears could type.

Of course there should also be

      • What is a regular expression?

though it comes close to being between "line noise" and "Other"

        Allow me to rephrase that...

        Regular expressions are:

        • A sign that God exists
        • What you need
        • What makes Perl so strong
        • Ergo, they think
        • A sure way to get shot in the foot
        • Line noise
        • An abomination of nature
      • I don't use m/Reg\w+\b/ at all
No Regards, no Regainings, no Regimes, no Regions, no Registers, no Regressions, no Regrets, no Regrouping, no Regularities, no Regulations?
      You could add "Klene's algebra".
      I prefer to sleep..
      • At night
      • At early morning
      • When doing code
      • When boss is out of city
      • When thinking about algorithm
      • When solving maths
      • I sleep 24 x 7
      • In exam hall
      • After a good lunch
      • While driving

I can afford to spend so much time at the Monastery because:

    • I got rich using Perl before the bubble burst
    • I work from home
    • With my dectupled productivity (thanks to Perl), I only need to work 1 hour per day
    • Parents' basement... 'nuff said

Future historians will find that the material characteristic to the era starting now is…

(4000-2001 BC was copper age, 2000-1 BC was bronze age, 1-2000 AD was iron age.)

    • aluminium
    • plastic
    • oil
    • water
    • carbon dioxide
    • copper again
    • iron again
    • silicon
    • salt

Update: ramrod makes a valid point, maybe “uranium” or “hydrogen” should be added as well.

Update: appeared as Future historians will find that the material characteristic of the current era is....

      How about nuclear . . .

Of course, noo-klee-er and noo-kyuh-ler would need to be considered to avoid controversy.
I think 'unclear' should also be there, not only for typos and also as it seems a very valid option...
Not quite a material, but I'd call it the electricity age...

Maybe add 'electron' as a material?

What is your preferred method of suicide? ( Sorry, a bit depressed today) :-(

I'm not really a human, but I play one on earth Remember How Lucky You Are
      Hey, zentara, cheer up!

Here are some possible answers for your poll:

      • die;
      • die "with a blast";
      • die die;
      • exit;
      • no_such_method();
      • use SOAP::Lite;
      • warn die;
      • die warn;
        cog,
        • *new = *DESTROY; # The cycle of life in 1 easy step
        • END { undef sin(); } # Purge all sin in the end
        • sleep; # go to sleep and never wake up
        • kill $$; # generic suicide

Ok, this is more poetry than poll but I am sure one could come up with other fun ones using the functions. Here are some ideas:

        Cheers - L~R

        kill KILL => $$
looks like my poll idea has generated alot of interest. How about
      system( "cat $0 > /dev/null");

I'm not really a human, but I play one on earth Remember How Lucky You Are

Eh, no. Useless use of cat.

system "cat /dev/null > $0" or exec $0; die or die; # just to be sure
Another important question is what do you want done with your body after your dead?

I've always wanted mine to be actually blown-up in a hollywood movie. One that's not a bomb (sorry), has a good plot, and lots of action. Obviously, a James Bond movie would be the ultimate!

Just think - immortalized forever on celluloid without ever having to take an acting class!

what do you want done with your body after your dead?

I want it to be revived.

These days your corpse would just be digitally remastered and blown up in fully animated glory. Meanwhile your actual corpse would be stuck in the oven, and the ashes would be dumped in the trash bin behind the sound stage.

If found in time and in good condition, anything other than taking it apart for spare parts is selfish.

    Folks-

In a tip of my hat to a great article by bobf++, I'd like to see the following poll:

What makes you go all PerlMonks over something?

  • A seemingly simple question like: How many colors does a rainbow have?
  • Asking the wrong question, and an unwavering belief that its answer is THE solution.
  • Self proclaimed, clearly-wrong, experts that no amount of evidence can sway.
  • When people don't agree with me.
  • PEOPLE - Any interactions with people.
  • Hold-on! You mean there are other states of being?

The release of Perl 6 will ...
    • bring a new Golden Age of Perl to the rejoicing masses
    • be mainly well-received by a strong, active community
    • have a lukewarm response, with complaints starting immediately
    • be met by an angry crowd armed with torches and pitchforks
    • be suppressed by the Perl 5 cabal
    • cause a black hole that will destroy the Earth
    • awaken CowboyNeal from his long slumber

Re: poll ideas quest 2009 (light source)
by ambrus (Abbot) on May 13, 2009 at 13:11 UTC

This may be risky in that it could start flaming, but it's probably worth anyway.

The light source I use for reading at night is…

    • Nothing, I sleep at night
    • Nothing, I can read in the dark
    • Moonlight
    • Nothing, I migrate between the two poles
    • Nothing, I live in outer space
    • Nothing, I live on planet Kalgash
    • Campfire
    • Candle
    • Oil lamp
    • Arc lamp
    • Gas lamp
    • Traditional incandescent blub
    • Halogen lamp
    • Fluorescent light
    • Light of a CRT monitor
    • LED
    • Genetically modified fish that glow in the dark
    • Magic
    • Future technology (big mirrors in space)
    • Flamethrower or Rube Goldberg device
    • Other

Update: added CRT (thanks to StommePoes for the idea).

Update: just an explanation. I basically just wanted to ask whether you prefer halogen lamps or lamps with normal light bulbs, but I got carried away in the spirit of TIMTOWTDI. It's probably better this way for a Perlmonks poll.

      Glow in the dark condoms
So you do a bit of reading between the lin^H^H^Hsheets? ;)

Here in Europe, governments have actually started banning the incadescent bulbs. They're forcing us back to the Middle ages, we'll have to read the computer screen in candlelight like before Edison. Can you believe it?

Not just Europe. Start hoarding now ;-)

        --MidLifeXis

If you are adding CRT, you should probably add "Cell Phone Display". That's another popular one (at least popular around me).

Where possible, <markup> tags should be written in
    • UPPERCASE
    • lowercase
    • CamelCase
    • Ucfirstcase
    • uclastcasE
    • vOwElcAsE (|3375p33k)
    • CoNSoNaNTCaSe (inverse |3375p33k)
    • rAndoMCaSe
    • All of the above
    • None of the above

You forgot dromedaryCase and lCFIRSTCASE (these two are handy for languages like prolog or haskell or ruby where the case of the first letter of a word counts as a silgil).

Use single letter tag names, and make them case-sensitive because that allows more choices. If you run out of single letter names, use two-letter names with the case of both letters significant.

Consistent case (i.e., pick a style and use it for all tags consistently).

Maybe more interesting than reading 'regex' itself is how to you read an actual regex? For example:

    $_ !~ /^((\d+\!)*\d+([\,\-]\d+)*:\d+([\,\-]\d+)*(\;)?)+$/

Is that "dollar sign underscore space exclamation point tilde space forward slash caret open parenthesis ..."

Or do you abbreviate: "dollar underscore bang twiddle slash hat paren ..."

Am I the only person here whose mind was so warped by a childhood exposure to BASIC that he still pronounces $ as "string"? ;)
        I still do, too. *blush*
        لսႽ† ᥲᥒ⚪⟊Ⴙᘓᖇ Ꮅᘓᖇ⎱ Ⴙᥲ𝇋ƙᘓᖇ

What was the last time you actually read a regex?

You speak as if showering is a daily thing. :P

And you didn't even know bears could type.

        • Every month
        • Before Christmas
        • What is the shower?

Not necessarily. Even if you take a shower only every other day, you'd probably do it either in the morning or the evening (not during work, though another option is doing it in the afternoon right after work).

    I normally post from:

    Africa
    north America
    south America
    Antartide
    Asia
    Europe
    Oceania
    orbiting spacecraft
    inside the Matrix
    post office
    CowboyNeal's home

This would be close to a repeat of I live in this Continent.

Given that the site is now ten years old, the pollsters may decide that we should start to repeat old polls, but then at least repeat the really interesting ones please. Monks can vote on old polls (I went through all of them once), there's an official link to this from polls, and you don't even need votes or level for this. Thus, IMO we should not repeat a poll just because there are lots of new monks that weren't here when it was originally on, but only if there's a reason to believe that the opinions of many monks that have voted on the old poll have changed since. In theory, there could also be an option of making an existing old poll to appear in the voting booth nodelet again, as a way to direct attention to it.

Update. Let me also note that the official instructions How do I create a Poll? ask you to read all the past polls.

ok I have to confess (or croak?) that I have not read ALL the previous ones. sorry for the time you lost for this. IMHO an age poll and may a location poll can be repeated. yearly

Back in 2002 there was a poll on how we have chosen our user-ids: My username is....

Who else thinks repeating that poll (with exactly the same answers!) would be fun?!

Rata (wondering if sth. has changed in these years)

I don't think we should repeat it. Instead, we should have another thread to continue the thread that must not be named, with "2009" in the title, because the original is very long and loads very slow. You could then discuss how you got your screen names in that thread.

If Perl were a character in Watchmen, it would be:
    • Dr. Manhattan, all-wise, all-powerful
    • Ozymandias: there's got to be a better way than what's currently being done
    • the Comedian, TMTOWTDI: rifle, pistol, flamethrower, fists...
    • Nite-Owl: cool use of technology
    • Silk Spectre: sleak, beautiful, powerful
    • Rorshach: it knows, it cares, and it will keep at the problem when everyone else gives up

    Why do you use Perl?

    • I don't. I'm just on PerlMonks for the free beer
    • Because Larry's my dad, and he told me I had to
    • Perl is just chicken scratch anyway, so when I write all of my code using regex's, people actually think I know what I'm doing
    • Because Perl makes easy things easy, and hard things possible
    • I was told that if I use Perl, I'm allowed to be lazy, and lazy works for me
    • I really like the writing style of many of its books authors
    • ...what else is there?
    • easy to use, easy to understand
    • it has one of the best online communities anywhere

Does Gödel's incompleteness theorem refute Leibniz's dream about the machine that solves all mathematical problems, as Smullyan suggests?

The argument is that the machine couldn't correctly answer the question "will you answer false to this question"?

    • Yes
    • Yes, supposing the Church-Turing thesis
    • No, the Church-Turing thesis does not apply to this machine
    • No, Leibniz dreamed of something different
    • No, Leibniz didn't know what he actually wanted
    • No, you won't actually ask such a question from it
    • No, for some other reason

Update: changed "Do you suppose " to "Does " in the question.

What programming language would you like to see secondary to Perl in this site?

    • Java and other variants of Java
    • C and other variant languages
    • functional programming languages such as Mathematica, Haskell, and others
    • other
    • all of the above!

      ...

      • English (for native speakers thereof who abuse it badly)
excuse me? my english is not too bad, actually, besides the fact that I capitalize almost nothing.
I meant, "C and" not "C nd". sorry for the typo.

You can edit the post, I believe. Go to the original node and a textbox should be present with the contents of your post. Edit and update.

Regular expressions should be taught in schools instead of:

    • Math
    • History
    • English

    • Detention

My pick would be Math - i find regular expressions rather more useful.

Perl 6 needs a theme song! I think it should be:
    • "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" - BTO
    • "Bridge Over Troubled Water" - Simon & Garfunkel
    • "Messiah" - Handel
    • "Requiem" - Mozart
    • "Stairway to Heaven" - Led Zeppelin
    • "Dazed and Confused" - Led Zeppelin
    • "Walking on Sunshine" - Katrina and the Waves
    • "Walking on Broken Glass" - Annie Lennox
    • "(I can't get no)Satisfaction" - The Rolling Stones
    • "It's more fun to compute" - Kraftwerk
    • "Daisy Bell" - Harry Dacre (but only as performed by either the IBM 704 or the HAL 9000)
    • Anything written by Lalo Schifrin
    • CowboyNeal
    • Other

Update:Added Kraftwerk suggestion, as it is doubly-relevant (song name, and type of band), as well as Daisy
