Voting in the User's Home page

by sathiya.sw (Monk)
on Dec 29, 2008 at 12:42 UTC ( [id://733008]=monkdiscuss: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

I used to check the "User home page".. ( where the user information's are there, with their picture, XP, level ) whenever there is a nice question / answer or stupid answer / question.... ( to get to know who is that, and is there any useful information available over there )...

Why can't we can have a vote option there also ??

And i felt some of the pages are very much useful, where it is been linked to very useful nodes, and some other useful information.

I think we should be able to vote for that also ?

Is It ? or any other opinions ?

And just exactly what value would this add to the voting system or the quality of home nodes? Do you want to punish someone for not making their bed? I myself see no value being added by this whatsoever. Just more needless branches on a decision tree that make the code base and bug fixes potentially more complex. Go write a tutorial.

    H---H---H---H---H---H---

since my intent and sathiya.sw's are same, I would like to answer your questions

And just exactly what value would this add to the voting system or the quality of home nodes?
voting system in my opinion is just an appreciation to the value contributed by the perlmonks user.
what is the purpose of having a profile(editing) link in user's home page, please clarify.

Do you want to punish someone for not making their bed?
Not exactly, appreciation is my intent, (another suggestion, just provide only ++ link, not -- at all)

Just more needless branches on a decision tree that make the code base and bug fixes potentially more complex.
I couldn't visualize this, reason that I know nothing about internals of perlmonks site, please tell me how this 'provision of voting on home node' could go complex?

      Go write a tutorial.
We wanted to contribute to the system where we learn knowledge from. Tutorial is one way but not the only way.

Atlast, if providing voting on home node requires lots of thinking and development time, testing time, etc, and if we don't have enough people/resources to do that, it is okay, we expect some monk(might also be me) who thinks voting on home node is useful; could get into pmdev sort of groups and could convince all powerful users of this perlmonks system and make this thing possible.

I agree that the danger of sympathy driven votes are big, but that is human nature i catch myself at voting for a particular person which helped me in the past more often than for other persons ... I dont think it is completely false to vote for home nodes since i regularly look for users home nodes that i think write good answers. Or home nodes from users that hang around at the chatterbox, and i have seen many interesting nodes linked from their home nodes that i may have never read otherwise ...

IMO, in the age of tabbed browsing, this idea isn't necessary ... and anyway, if you've a memory like mine, once you've read the users' home node, you'll undoubtedly have forgotten why you're there e.g. the question asked/point raised etc. ;-)

A user level that continues to overstate my experience :-))

I think it's the same reason why sitedoc don't have vote buttons either. Both these and homenodes often get edited, whereas votable nodes (like note or sopw) are rarlely edited in any significant way, so once you vote on one the vote will correspond to the value of the content for ever.

so once you vote on one the vote will correspond to the value of the content for ever.
I accept this, even in normal posts, I can change the entire content after voting frequently(don't worrying about down voting at all), but I have some discipline not to change(which could to lead to confusion) and just type 'UPDATE: ... ' and add further content. Let's hope for the best(discipline) from the users of this system not the other and try this 'voting enabled on the user's home node'

Because there is no criteria for homenode to be anything

The idea of voting on my home node doesn't feel so good to me. The content on that node is really more for me than others - though I'm happy if others also benefit.

I have been very grateful when people who like my user page send me a message or make a positive comment in the CB, especially if they are specific about what they enjoyed. That means a lot more to me than ++ on my home node or any XP it might yield.

Why not express your appreciation via a message? It is a great way to get to know other monks on a one-to-one basis.

    Best, beth
