I'd probably first scan the machine for apachectl or apache2ctl and when found, launch it with a '-v' flag. That'll show you information like (two random test servers): $ apachectl -v Server version: Apache/2.2.4 (FreeBSD) Server built: May 18 2008 17:19:41 and $ apache2ctl -v Server version: Apache/2.2.3 Server built: Mar 22 2008 09:29:10 Easy enough to parse that, I assume ;-)
