It sounds like your storing data in a Perl module. Much better would be to use DBM::Deep, DB_File, or any number of other data storage mechanisms.

My criteria for good software:
  1. Does it work?
  2. Can someone else come in, make a change, and be reasonably certain no bugs were introduced?
