PerlMonks statistics

I am working in a presentation about the Perl resources available on the web and some slides are going to be devoted to PerlMonks.

Specifically I would like to include some information about the average number of questions posted per day, the number of replies, the number of different monks that came here every day, etc. just to show how active the site is.

Looking around I have found a link to a page that in theory have such information (http://tinymicros.com/pm/index.php) but it doesn't work.

This old thread, PM Statistics?, ask mostly the same as here but doesn't have any satisfactory reply.

I am missing something?

Regarding the number of monks that come here every day, I have a stats page that gathers information about users visiting the site. It currently only displays the number of unique monks that it saw during the last 7 day window (right now that value is 1238). Update: I have just modified it to also report the number of unique users seen per day, averaged from the 7 days of data. It does not store its data beyond 7 days, so I cannot give any long-term trends about # of users visiting the site. Also, cloaked users and anonymonks are not accounted for, obviously. blokhead	[reply]

Number of Monks by Level shows how many monks have logged in over the last 24 hours, broken out by level.	[reply]

Before it went off-line a few months ago, http://tinymicros.com/pm/index.php was an excellent source of PerlMonks stats. The author, jcwren, is a PerlMonk, but according to his homenode, he has not been active on this site for nearly 2 years. However, he does provide his email address. It is definitely worthwhile trying to contact him directly.	[reply]

<shameless_plug> For a slightly different view of PerlMonks, you can try GoogleMonks </shameless_plug> And if you're not averse to a bit of XML-parsing, there is http://tinymicros.com/pm/monks.xml, which is updated daily, and is where GoogleMonks gets its data from. Although, it only includes those Monks that have supplied location data on their home nodes (about 900-odd). Update: Oh, I just noticed that even though that XML feed from tinymicros is still up, it has stopped updating a couple of months ago. /me goes looking for JC... Cheers, Darren :)	[reply]

McDarren It appears that JCWren is still trying to to correct a disk crash, I think there must be other issues, as this has been ongoing for some time without further updates, I tried contacting him some time ago but without success. Perhaps others at PM have more knowledge of what's going on.	[reply]

I offered him some help to bring the service up again and he replied once asking a few things; no more luck so far. He was running a Red Hat 7.x system and the web depended on PHP4 before the disk crash. I'll try to contact him again when one of my RH7 servers is spare, just in case he's still interested in revamping the site.	[reply]

For the number of users, see Number of Monks by Level. For the number of questions per day, Super Search listing of SOPW is suitable to find this out, because it lists SOPW nodes concisely and with date. It only lists about fifty nodes at once, so you may want to hit the button to continue the search a few times and use the results together. Note especially that weekends usually have less traffic than weekdays.	[reply]
