kdelph has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Since everyone has seemed to tell me I must learn Unix for programming with Perl it's so much easier to make a web site that way I have decided to do it, I have installed Unix and have Perl on it but do not know first how to install Java 2 and how to set up my IP address so that I can connect to the internet. I have the domaine name and server address. I have a Gateway Labtop, with a 3com ethernet card, it is identified by the system, but when I connect the usb (seeing as I have optimum online a that connects with a usb) I then get a message unrecognized usb device, when I boot the computer . So maybe I don't need to change the IP address but need to do something else I don't know I have read through so many how to's and am stuck can anyone help? Thank you.

What Unix are you speaking about? I guess you might be talking about Linux - but I might be wrong aswell. There are tons of distributions/vendors out there whose versions differ in more or less significant parts. Without more information it is really hard maybe even impossible to give you a quick answer that's worth the research.

The way how to install Java or how to setup your internet connection also depends on that. Maybe there is java already included/supported in the version you are using - there should be installers available for most of the popular un*x' out there.

For you said you do have usb I guess you are using Linux? Please let us know which distribution and which version (both kernel and distribution) you are using - usb support is still worked on intensively...

About failure messages: Without the exact text it's hard to help there.

    My sugguestions:

    • Find out which distribution/vendor you are using.
    • Try to find a local friend that helps you with setting up the thing (that's the fastest way ;)
    • Find the right places to ask: I personally would sugguest to go to the usenet - there is a load of information there. A huge archive is at google
I hope you can find your way - but here you are quite offtopic, I guess :)

To LEARN perl, you can use any machine or none at all. To USE perl, including all of the builtin functions and take advantage of ALL functionality, yes, you'll need a UN*X or a derivative thereof. Considering that your question has little if anything to do with Perl and the fact that you don't provide enough information, it's impossible to help you further. While I certainly don't want to dismay you from using your "UNIX", perhaps this would be a good time to ask for the help of someone that can sit and tackle the problems at the computer.
