Totally the Wizard of Oz -- who else is the embodiment of Laziness, Impatience, and Hubris?

    • Laziness: sends others to do his dirty work. E.g. sends Dorothy and the gang on his mission.
    • Impatience: didn't have time to build a real emerald city, so he just makes everyone wear green-tint goggles. Sweet shortcut.
    • Hubris: the guy arrives in Oz and tells everyone he's a Wizard.

Nice reply, I totally agree. I did vote for the Wizard of Oz without reading this, but I couldn't have stated the reasons so cleanly.

Wouldn't Count Chocula use Cocoa? ;)

Revolution. Today, 3 O'Clock. Meet behind the monkey bars.

I would love to change the world, but they won't give me the source code

Well, blow me down, haven't thought of that one. rudder++!

Naturally, all of those guys are well fluent in RedCode, being the basic language in Evil Programming 101

Baba YagaDefinetely uses COBOL, like all ogres who eat children do.
Count ChoculaI heard that he uses Python.
    Gandalf Probably uses Scheme.
    GargamelAlas, Visual Basic.
Merlin Son of the devil, but for the good uses intricate LISP.
Mr. SpockReal Vulcans do assembly, chaps.
Professor X is a scientist and must use FORTRAN.
Raistlin MajereWizard of darkness, fell into C++.
Randall Flaggis a dark prophet that spread the ugly virus of PHP.
ShazamIncredibly powerful. Does Perl all the time.
Wizard of OzThis one is not a real magician. Probably does only HTML and pretend it's programming.

Please, it's not called FORTRAN any longer; it's now called Fortran.

I think that Raistlin Majere would use PL/1, the official language of Satan.

But Professor X uses the one and only true Fortran, FORTRAN77 :)

Of course, Gandalf would have to have his text transliterated into tengwar, and use Perl in Quenya.

    Tom "Turkey" Schaffer ( : >~

It'a a pity it doesn't exist, we should do something about it.

BTW I think Sindarin would be more appropriate than Quenya.

Does anybody know if there is unicode support for feanorean runes?

        Careful with that hash Eugene.

"Wizardly [cryptic] runes" would imply something really inscrutable, like APL. And they accuse Perl of resembling line noise?

Naaa. Rincewind is definitely a VB programmer. Ponder Stibbons write in Perl (on HEX).

      Careful with that hash Eugene.

I voted "other", agreeing with you in author, but disagreeing in detail. How could you describe Rincewind as "wizardly"!? Ridcully the Brown has, IMHO, the DWIM mentality off pat.

Nah, I see him as more of an Algol programmer. But I think that Arthur Weasley would enjoy dabbling in Perl.

      • another intruder with the mooring in the heart of the Perl

I see Arthur Weasley a more of a BASH person, not quite made it to be a full blown wizard.

        Slytherin would definitly use Python.

Come on. Merlin posts here: which of the others has ever shown his face?

That was my first thought, then I realised I was confusing Merlyn with Merlin

Mr. Spock, definitely. The Wizard of Oz is an old DOS batch programmer, you can tell just by lookin' at him. Randall Flagg, he's a Python programmer. Gargamel I suspect is C#, but I'm just guessing there. And Merlin? He's old school C, all the way. I also have it on good authority that Count Chocula does all of his programming on an Apple ][e in ugly old BASIC. From what I understand, Professor X is a Prolog programmer.

"Wiz" Zumwalt would, if we could get him to stop thinking in C ...
How could I have forgotten Corwin of Amber? After all, he's mastered Pattern matching...

I could see Corwin learning a batch-processing language really well and perhaps awk, but Merlin is the one who knew just about every programming language worth knowing. He built his own theoretical computer, found a shadow where it would work, and wrote its expert system, remember?

Of course, and Merlin{Amber} mastered Chaos strolling...

Well if you are going to control a house with Chicken Feet I'd use something like Perl, especially if you want it dancing.

I suppose I'm suffering from a lack of imagination but I voted for Merlin because I've read so many of his articles over on Stonehenge.

Speaking of a lack of imagination, I can't believe Spock would like Perl with all the fuzz of TIMTOWTDI and dynamic typing and such. In my mind, Spock programs directly in binary to avoid the imprecision of all those "overly human" languages.

Exactly. Spock wouldn't touch perl with a ten foot pole. He would find "Do what I mean" illogical because he would always exactly specify what he wants.

I would have said Prolog, as '(il)logical' is in every second sentence of his, but your reason for binary would appeal to him too, I'm sure.

      - my firsth thought was indeed binary/assembly for good old Spocky as well .. but then the other words of Mr. Spock came to my mind .. because next to "its illogical!" he even often mention "interesting!" .. and the later would be the reason why he would use Perl for private studys .. maybe vulcans use Prolog/Lisp at work ..
      - Wizard of Oz would indeed just use CSS to cover HTML being a language.
      - Gargamel would try C but always fail with Runtime Exceptions
      - Merlin I would assume to use Smalltalk
      - Raistlin Majere would indeed use Occam :)
Excellent point about Raistlin! ++, whomever you are!

Of these choices, definitely the Wizard of Oz. In addition to his exemplification of the Virtues, as noted above, Perl is often the unnoticed power behind the curtain, making processes work and unifying the disparate.
I misread the question as "least likely" and answered the W. of O. precisely because of the curtain issue: the W. explicitly sez "pay no attention" to the man behind the curtain ... this now seems dangerous to me. So I wish I hadn't voted that way ...

Actually, I think Shazam should use AWK (if anyone gets this joke, raise your hand).

Stop saying 'script'. Stop saying 'line-noise'.
We have nothing to lose but our metaphors.

I don't (and I'm a Captain Marvel fan); could you explain?

Because both SHAZAM (Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury) and AWK (Aho ,Weinberger, Kernighan) are acronyms of names!. Hahaha. Ha.

Well, ya know, all regular Perl users are sufficiently wizardly beings, and no being that is not a regular Perl user is a wizardly being.

I would have to say that it would be most like Mr. Spock. Why? Well for one he's Vulcan, a race of beings who live their lives based purely on logic, and what does programming revolve around? Yes, that's right, logic. And what is Perl? That's right, a programming language. When you wish to argue my point, just remember what Mr. Spock always says to Captain Kirk "Captain, that is illogical." Now that my rant is over, it is time for me to take my leave, live long and prosper. :-)

Harry Dresden doesn't program computers; he and electronics don't get along.

Doctor Fate and Doctor Strange use arcane runes when they case spells, so they probably use APL.

Bob Howard used to be a SysAdmin, so he'd definitely use Perl.

Gandalf, 'cause of the way he dresses. None of the other pointy-hat crowd (except possibly Rincewind, and he's an intern in the testing department) gets ratty like Gandalf.

Err... Did I just insult everyone..?

Err... Did I just insult everyone..?

Certainly Gandalf, but he (she?) doesn't seem to be paying attention.

Wizard of Oz? He wasn't even a wizard! You surely meant the Wizard of Id! And he would be using Perl all the time, guaranteed!

I'm surprised to see Spock topping the list. I would think that Perl wouldn't be rigidly structured enough for Spock. Rather than subscribing to the TMTOWTDI philosophy, I see Spock as more of a "there's only one right way to do it" sort of person. :)

Wizard of Oz, for sure. What other programming language can make an average man seem like a wizard in the eyes of his peers?

I'm disappointed in the list, though, because the author seems to have a very loose definition of "wizardly beings"... Count Chocula? Spock? Even Professor X is stretching it a bit, but he is indeed wizardly compared to those two.

All this talk of Raistlin, I've always thought that that trilogy would make a superb trilogy for the big screen, a la LoTR. I wonder if some day I'll get my wish. Not likely. What a great story though...
