It sounds like a homework question............. But sure.... you need to know about things like dividing something by zero will cause the universe to malfunction. Even pure text processing needs numerical computations occaisionally. BUT I'm sure you can still use Perl, and not know algebraic basics, you can always ask a co-worker for help.
