in reply to Perlmonks facebookers, untie! You have nothing to loose but your bonds!

I would have joined your group, but I have deactivated my account three weeks ago. I found that I wasn't getting a great deal of value from all the vampire bites and things.

Update: Well, I guess there is some value in it -- for an employer:

Who says Facebook is the province of the young? Increasingly, the 30something bosses of naive recent college grads are proving adept at turning the social network against its earliest adopters. Kevin Colvin, an intern at Anglo Irish Bank's North American arm, was busted when he told his manager, Paul Davis, that he'd miss work due to what colleagues took to be a "family emergency". Davis turned up the photo above, freshly posted to Facebook from the Halloween party Colvin apparently missed work to attend, and attached it to his reply, copying the rest of the office as he did it. The email thread is now spreading around the net. After the jump, the entire exchange, and the incriminating photo.

Update: There is a new, well-written informationweek article on social networks by Cory Doctorow, titled How Your Creepy Ex-Co-Workers Will Kill Facebook

For a long time, I didn't get why hate was directed at Facebook for stuff like this. Come to find out, that's because I use it to keep in touch with a small circle of friends who are a bit too old for "zombie werewolves vs. ninja vampires." I saw some teens using it at the library, and their pages were wall to wall viral stuff like that.

Their API is pretty neat, though, and there are some modules for interfacing with it over at CPAN. I'd like to see some real widgets made, beyond the viral crap.

Edit: Is it a bad sign that I can't stop my mind from parsing the node title as un-tie (like untie $this_tied_thing) instead of unite?

Reminds me of the shirt I got for my (dyslexic) sister:

      "Dsylexics of the World, Untie!"

It took me 10 minutes to realize that "Untie" is not "Unite", but it took me forever to realize that "Dsylexics" is mis-spelled, too...
        Dyslexia? What's lysdexia?

Is it a bad sign that I can't stop my mind from parsing the node title as un-tie (like untie $this_tied_thing) instead of unite?

Not when the node title actually is untie :)
