That code seems to come from chapter 1 of the book Higher-Order Perl. In the book, it's accompanied by a detailed explanation, and a simpler example.

I hope it wouldn't be out of line to suggest that you might understand the code better if you had the book.

    IMHO not out of line at all. Chapter 1 alone is worth the price of the book.
