editor blues (again!)

on Oct 27, 2007 at 21:02 UTC ( [id://647632]=perlquestion: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Pstack has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

The fascisti have got to KATE in KDE-3.4 and custom syntax colours now seem to be off the menu. A shame, as I rate that the primary feature of a GUI code editor and really am not going to submit to unreadable schemes anymore than write my code someone else's way or move from Perl to Java or go back to cold war (keystroke memorising) abominations. Been there, done that!

So, once again, find myself looking for a GUI to do it MY WAY (equivalent to EditPlus in Windows). The linux FC4 candidates now seem to be Bluefish, CSSD, Geany, Editra.

My guess is that there is another perlman out there (perhaps also wizened and intractable) who can point me to the path of least grief in this respect? Any chance?

fascisti, KATE, KDE-3.4,custom syntax colours, off the menu

Maybe I didn't get the joke in this, but here I have kate 2.5.7 on KDE 3.5.7 and there's an option
      [Settings]=>[Configure Kate]=>[Editor]=>[Fonts&Colors]

where they allow me to load schemes for a zillion of languages and actually modify them at will (in the "Highlighting Text Styles"-Tab).

What's the context of your complaint? FC4? Why not drop it?

    Regards

    mwa

"....and actually modify them at will (in the "Highlighting Text Styles"-Tab)."

Ooops .. egg on my face again! Why could I not find that myself seeing as how I've used it intensively for 3 years? A nice reward, thanks mwah.

      P.S.

Not total joy however. Kate 3.4 seems to insist on altering the carefully mastered users and permissions on every rewrite-save of a re-edited script, resulting in catastrophic failures like " *** glibc detected *** /usr/bin/perl: double free or corruption (!prev): 0x094f3240 *** " . I cannot see anywhere that I can put a stop to this intrusion over the mastered settings?

May I hope to be wrong yet again?

As I recall it, vim was really easy to add menu items to. If you're really particular about your menus, the only real solution is to find an editor that customizable.

cheers ... but a creature of the cold war.

I use jEdit on all systems I come across: Linux, Solaris, Mac OS X and even WinDOS.

      SciTE
Another one to play with -- 'yum install scite' is underway. Cheers.

Have you tried running EditPlus with Wine? Alternately you could hack custom colors back into Kate. If they used to be customizable it's probably an easy change. Back in the day I did something similar to Pine to change some key configs and it was definitely worth the minimal effort.

Well, mwah set me straight on getting updated kate to customise, so I can stick there meantime. Problem was the switching of customisable dialogs around -- they were always laid out somewhat unintuitively for me, and the ever diminishing eyesight did not handle the new tangle.

Having found that, blasted the blinding preponderance of reddish colours, Kate now works fine for me as before, and I do also love the (better than EditPlus) extra features it provides -- a toggleable tack-on terminal emulator that follows your navigation around (most of the time) and 'string-search in subtree' functionality. All in all, I really do rate Kate.

      I appreciate your contribution nonetheless.

      cheers
