I think part of the problem is the name of the symbol itself: "hashmarks" sounds vaguely obscene;
whereas "octothorpe" has an erudite sound.

Maybe the style wouldn't be so obnoxious if the name were nicer?

BTW, in my curiosity, I looked up tubaandy's "octarand" and couldn't find it anywhere; is any one else familiar with its use?

    "octothorpe" only sounds "erudite" to an idiot. The name came from someone who can't count to nine and who thinks appending a random football player's name is clever.
