Flávio Glock hired by Portuguese IT Company Vertical One

by ruoso (Curate)
on Jun 26, 2007 at 09:02 UTC ( [id://623332]=perlnews: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Flávio Glock (fglock), former researcher at the Pontifícia Universidade Catolica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUC-RS), president of the Sociedade Perl do Brasil (Perl Society in Brasil), responsible for the development of several Perl modules and applications in the Perl Community, takes position as manager of the Research and Development department at Vertical One - Informations Systems.

Important member of the Perl Community, Flávio Glock is author and/or co-author in the following projects:

  • v6 - Development of the Perl 6 to Perl 5 compiler.
  • DateTime - Set of reference modules for date manipulation.
  • Inline-Parrot - Use of parrot code inline in Perl 5.
  • Pugs-Compiler-Rule - Regular Expressions Engine (actually Perl 6 Rules) to Perl 6 in Perl 5.
  • MiniPerl6 - Intermediary language in which the Perl 6 compiler is being written.

In the Research and Development department, Flávio will have a fundamental role in the development and research of innovations for the Portuguese market, besides the continuation of his valuable work for the Perl Community.

UPDATE Following the comment by blazar: by continuation of his valuable work, it's meant that Vertical One will be supporting fglock in his efforts to the Perl Community not just as a marginal task, this is one of the assignements of his job.

I stumbled upon your post because as I wrote elsewhere I often start my visits to the Monastery from Worst Nodes, and it was listed there. I ++'d it since I see no reason why it should have a negative reputation, although I can understand the concerns of some who may have possibly downvoted it due to the fact that it is more of a personal ad in favour of one Perl-person than an actual piece of Perl News proper . Thus you may want to consider adding some details about which consequences this may possibly have for the Perl world itself. For example, will this Vertical One sponsor or at least support some of the development Flávio could do for his ongoing project, which you listed?

Maybe I'm too close to the Perl 6 development, maybe I'm too close to the company itself. But considering Flávio is one of the main names in the Perl 6 development, I thought it was of public interest that Flávio is moving from Brazil to Portugal to work in an Open Source Company.

Anyways, as I already updated in the original post, not only he will have support from the company, as the continuation of his work is part of his assignments. Having Flávio working in his own projects, as you probably understand, is very much important for Vertical One, because, as the Perl Community as a whole, the company is very much interested in the results of this projects.

I'll be honest and admit that I downvoted it, sorry if I'm a party pooper. The reason I downvoted is that it's a press release, sounds very much like a press release, released by a company to promote themselves. I want to read the wisdom of Perl monks here, not newsvertisements which I can find in abundance all over the place whether I like it or not.

And why would fglock not simply mention it himself?

And why would fglock not simply mention it himself?

Out of unpretentiousness and/or having more important stuff to do?

Yes, that's the pourpose of the voting system at all. But I disagree on your reasoning. News is not "newsvertisement" just because it refers a company. The event itself is more important than the company who protagonized it.
