OT / less obvious Troll posts and how to deal with them (consideration guidelines)

From What is consideration?:
Only blatant, egregiously offensive troll posts should be considered for reapage. For useless, stupid, off-topic, and annoying nodes:
  • if it is a root node, then don't approve it for any section.
  • if it is a reply, just ignore it. (Downvote it if you wish.)
Does this mean that we'll end up with a bunch of troll/OT nodes at the end of the listings just because they aren't reaped and aren't approved? (like this node - after almost a month it's still/again sitting in Unapproved petitions - bottom of Perl Monks Discussion). Or is there some mechanism that deals with this?

I'd much rather either approve them and let them drop off the new nodes lists, or reap them. At least that way they'll be gone from my site sight eventually.

I think I like the purgatory effect. I get this weird and perverse urge to front page funny trollish posts just for fun. I fight the urge, but the rush is undeniable. Hey, I need something now that I've quit smoking.

I also like the purgatory effect, but I must admit I am tempted to move trollish and unapproved posts to obfuscations. :)

Update: Oh, I see that Grandfather has just suggested this in a parallel thread.

They drop off. Do you think that that node is the one and only node ever, ever left unapproved in that section?

I don't know. I just know that that node seems to disappear and then pop up again, and it was getting on my nerves ;-)

How long does it take for nodes to drop off that list?

update: also, leaving nodes unapproved offends my sensibilities; my gut feeling is that if a node isn't good enough to approve it should be reaped. OTOH if the policy is to just leave them in "purgatory" then I will keep that in mind.

The problem with focusing on the approval status as a filter criterion is that it only works for root nodes.

A word spoken in Mind will reach its own level, in the objective world, by its own weight

I'm glad the particular post mentioned stayed around. I wouldn't have read it if not for this thread, but it was a real "hoot". The who-does-he-think-he-is line about merlyn was particularly fun.

So I would vote for a place to keep these little obnoxious gems where they won't bother people, but are still available FYA (For Your Amusement), as suggested in the recent Perl at play? thread. On the other hand, I'm not at all sure that it's worth the effort, or that it wouldn't degenerate.

I would like to see troll posts sent somewhere they can easily be ignored. They do not contribute anything positively to the web site.

A problem with troll posts is that if you are unfamiliar with the site or the subject matter; someone might take it seriously. The only way they might be able to distinguish that this a troll is to read the responses. I think that adds an extra burden to the person who does not know what is going on.

A suggestion could be that all root nodes that have a certain threshold of negative reputation are automatically sent to the troll room. The threshold could be set globally or a per user basis.

Not only is that possible, that's the whole point. Troll postings are inherently hostile to new users.
