    *takes a deep breath*

So I am being banned out there now?
No, someone put your node up for deletion and enough monks agreed to delete it so it was. Apparently later it was restored. update2: and then I put it up for deletion again because it was just a straight copy of some webpage and it got reaped. again.

Listen..I have 22 years IT experience
It doesn't look like it. It looks like you're trolling.
and I have TWO COLLEGE degrees! This is an outrage!
It doesn't look like you've got much experience with internet forums either. Or you're trolling.

I was merely trying to explain that if he was using IBM for DOS networking tools he probably wouldn't be having so much trouble network hacking.
Many people don't use DOS. Anyway, you should have replied to the original poster not to some other reply in the thread that has no relation to your post. Not that I think that's a good reason to remove your post there. UPDATE: Just copying a only very slightly related webpage isn't exactly helpful. But it explains why your post seemed so unrelated to the original question.

I also got a private message from "merlyn" telling me to stop using all caps when I say "PERL" Oh what like he is some kind of big PERL expert??? Gimme a break!
    He is.

    TWO COLLEGE DEGREES
Bigger letters don't make you right. Neither do college degrees.
I also got a private message from "merlyn" telling me to stop using all caps when I say "PERL" Oh what like he is some kind of big PERL expert??? Gimme a break!
      He is.
Technically, he is an expert in Perl and possibly in perl, not in PERL :)

I'm just wondering if we're feeding the troll here. Wouldn't it be better to ignore who has proved to be it beyond every reasonable doubt? Or wouldn't it be better to pretend it's a joke, as suggested by many? Just thinking.

Some more background: we've recently had a problem with someone who repeatedly plagiarized, trying to gain credit improperly. Thus when you verbatim cut-n-pasted something you triggered bad memories and feelings. So now you know that this isn't just an 'academic' matter to us. With this knowledge you should now realize you ought to say "whoops, next time I'll be clear where this material is coming from", as of course you should be in any forum.

And I can't help but say you have triggered so many hot buttons that you must not be surprised at suspicions of being a troll. In fact, you've specifically targeted some quite interesting items. Since I've not looked in on this, let's review:

Let's see your first introduction to us:

I have 22 years experience in IT and have recently been tasked with doing a lot of coding! I am a serious DOS hacker so having to deal with Perl is a bit trivial for me but I am having a serious problem right out of the box.
So what is most important to you is that you have far more experience than most anyone, DOS is the tool you love to stroke, and "Perl is a bit trivial for me". But then you can't install software on Solaris, which you paint as a problem of 'Perl'?

And then in your reply to spot-on help, you admit "another problem is I can't find the file I downloaded." How could you not imagine we thought this was a "today the PHB does programming" charade?

Next posting you say "... I really want to use DOS on Solaris" which is rather a non-sequitur. Oh, and "I am still trying get PERL installed on my Sun machine..its not easy I have 22 years experience in IT" at which point people are flipping coins for personal problems vs. professional ones.

Next posting says "Here is my code that I hacked..

       #!/usr/bin/perl
       bpstart_notify.loc1_server1_nt.bat
@REM this script is called by NetBackup when a backup is initiated
       @REM this script:

causing multiple people to spew coffee, at someone throwing Microsoft DOS batch at Perl on Solaris. Do we have a nomination for an entry to the DailyWTF?

Next posting: "This is really a challange it reminds me of the days of hacking AOL!" Wow, AOL was also a programming language?

Next posting: "I realized today that Perl is "open source"" ... "Also lots of really technical people in my hometown have never even heard of PERL!"

Bing! Troll! This is performance art, and you are the offspring of the "brillant Paula Bean" and Wassercrats.

Never heard of Perl? Don't you know France has a whole town named after the language?

We tend to reap troll posts, and yours obviously are. Your own home node is an excellent example of trollish behavior. You state the following:

****Here are some Perl tips for you newbies!*****

Managing Workfiles and Debugging Batch s‎crip‎ts:

    * Begin coding the Build option of the Setup Batch file
    * More techniques for debugging errors in Batch files
    * Create transient working files in the TEMP folder with the emending suffix
    * Use COPY to copy a file to a new destination name in a new folder
    * Use COPY with a wildcard to copy multiple files in one operation
    * Make subfolder structures with the MD command
    * Use ECHO ON and @ECHO OFF to debug a section of problem Batch code
    * Use deltree to remove subfolder structures
    * Avoid stalling a s‎crip‎t when deltree prompts for y/n confirmation
    * Redirect unwanted deltree reports to NUL
    * Use deltree safely while developing s‎crip‎ts that use it
    * Use a confirmation sub-menu for user-confirmation of major actions

Which I found is a direct cut-and-paste from an online syllabus for a course on MS-DOS batch files (not Perl at all). Here's the link: http://www.allenware.com/icsw/icswidx.htm

That's complete plagiarism, and the theme of your trolling seems obvious; confusing Perl with DOS batch file scripting. This theme is fairly obvious as it's a common thread in all your posts, plus it's carried on in your home node with the above snippet. Also note the following from your home node:

Glad to be out here I am willing to code for hire also you can message me in the chatterbox application (is that written in DOS?)

If anyone doubts your trollish intent, let them investigate and see what you're all about. Fortunately trolls get bored pretty quickly and tend to move on. See you on the next forum...

So I offer my technical assistance to a user and next time I log in I see this??

NodeReaper says I've reaped your node Reaped: Re^2: regexp problem, square parentheses ("brackets"). Reason: ikegami: Reap for being offtopic. Relates neither to Perl nor to the parsing question at hand.

It would have been very kind of you to include a link to the reaped node instead of requiring one to look it up.

So I am being banned out there now? Listen..I have 22 years IT experience and I have TWO COLLEGE degrees! This is an outrage! I was merely trying to explain that if he was using IBM for DOS networking tools he probably wouldn't be having so much trouble network hacking.

You have not "been banned". The node has (had) been reaped.

BTW: although I concur with ysth's opinion that the node should not have been reaped due to its nature, after having read it now I also wholeheartedly agree with ikegami's opinion that it is horrendously, blatantly, annoyingly OT.

I have been one of those defending the idea that you are not a troll, against several different claims that you are, but I find that increasingly hard to believe. Your insistent, repeated, annoying, PITAful boasting about your alleged 22 years of experience and alleged degrees is not impressing anyone here! We judge you from what you write, and you've not made a good impression thus far.

I also got a private message from "merlyn" telling me to stop using all caps when I say "PERL" Oh what like he is some kind of big PERL expert???

Not only did legendary Perl hacker merlyn /msg you that, it has also already been repeatedly and sometimes extensively told you.

    Gimme a break!

    Give us a break!

BTW: although I concur with ysth's opinion that the node should not have been reaped due to its nature, but after having read it now I also wholeheartedly agree with ikegami's opinion that it is horrendously, blatantly OT.
I didn't say it shouldn't be reaped—I said we don't reap things for being OT. If someone felt it was a blatant troll, it should have been considered for reaping on that account.

So I am being banned out there now?

    Dear Monk,
You certainly have a lot to learn. But I am giving you the benefit of the doubt and making the presumption that you are willing to learn. So I will spend some time to answer your post even though I am becoming more convinced that you are a troll.

If you were being "banned" we have a special place of punishment for monks who have committed venial sins against the Monastery.

But instead of "banning" you personally your node was consigned to reaping. In the end the gods deigned to unreap your node and let it stand for all the world to see.

That's called peer review. Surely someone with 22 years of IT experience understands what peer review is.

Listen..I have 22 years IT experience and I have TWO COLLEGE degrees!

You are not helping yourself by repeating that over and over again. I have been in the IT world since 1982. Big deal. I know lots of folks that have been in the IT world 1 year 22 times. Meaning they make the same mistakes over and over again and never learn from them.

Having lots of "time in service" and having experience are two different things.

Truthfully, I've been involved in computers since 1971 and have been there done that in a lot of phases of the computer field. I still consider myself a "student" of the computer field in that I still learn something new on a regular basis.

Another bit that normally comes with true long term experience is maturity. Maturity means you know how to deal with other people without having to resort to tantrums and tactics of a sort that 2 year olds use.

The more you repeat what your qualifications allegedly are the more trouble I have believing you have them.

I was merely trying to explain that if he was using IBM for DOS networking tools he probably wouldn't be having so much trouble network hacking.

How, pray tell me, did this constructively contribute to the discussion at hand? While this is a Monestary religious arguments (if you were trying to foment one) are not tolerated. I could go on an on for days over why I consider Unix in general and Linux in particular more well suited for the datacenter than Windows. But I don't out of respect for those who have a preference for Windows. There is no place for religous argument in any forum. If you want to engage in one try doing so privately. I know that I'd just build a filter that ignored your emails if you tried that tactic with me and you're very close to getting your name added to my list of /ignoreed users here.

I also got a private message from "merlyn" telling me to stop using all caps when I say "PERL" Oh what like he is some kind of big PERL expert???

Do you even know who merlyn is? Or do you even care?

I've been messing about with Perl since the late eighties when it was posted to alt.unix.sources as a collection of uuencoded shar files. In spite of my longevity with Perl I would not hesitate to say that merlyn has probably forgotten more about Perl than I've learned.

Understanding who someone you are dealing with is before you get your panties in a bunch about what they tell you is called "respect" where I come from. If you want respect you need to learn to give it out. What you sow is what you reap.

22 YEARS EXPERIENCE TWO COLLEGE DEGREES

Sorry... that doesn't impress me. You have succeeded in giving me the impression that you are an educuated troll fool. Whatever your 22 years of experience is in, I'm not convinced that you've learned anything important.

Yeah, what was the purpose of reset again?
what was the purpose of reset again?

Resetting "A-Z" is not recommended because you'll wipe out your @ARGV and @INC arrays and your %ENV hash. Resets only package variables--lexical variables are unaffected, but they clean themselves up on scope exit anyway, so you'll probably want to use them instead.

        You mean... that reset? :-)

    Gimme a break!

Take one. Sit back, relax and ponder the fact that this forum is about Perl.

If a post of yours is being considered and eventually reaped, it's the node being dismissed, not you being banned.

See, it's like fork() - once a node gets posted, it's fate isn't linked anymore to yourself, although you will get it's reflections.

    --shmem

    _($_=" "x(1<<5)."?\n".q·/)Oo. G°\ /
                                  /\_¯/(q /

If you're going to troll, you could you at least make up your own comments or run the original through some sort of markov algorithm so it's not so google-able.

FWIW, offtopic posts are not supposed to be reaped. Per the documented policy, this fate is reserved for blatant trolls and true duplicates (though spam also gets reaped, and no one seems to mind). .

Ok is this guy a joke by somebody or simply a troll? He has started 6 threads and only responded once in he first one.

I have never heard anybody repeat "Well I have xx years in IT"

The bit about Merlyn also makes it suspect.

I just assumed he was joking. That last "TWO COLLEGE DEGREES" was especially just too over the top. :)

if you have 22 year of experience in IT and 2 degree, i'm Larry Wall...:-)
And, honestly, there's no need to continuosly rebate your "experience" in your post...there's no difference if you have or not 22 years of experience and 2(or 3...or 20!) degrees.

Kevin - keep it up. Very funny satire.

It's too bad that it doesn't quite seem to translate to most people.

When you're on the internet no-one knows that you are a dog.

    TWO COLLEGE DEGREES

They wouldn't happen to be from Belford U would they? They have the best Perl-DOS curriculum of any school I know of.

Belford U ..... where Washingtom bureaucrats study for promotions.
