Out of curiosity, I've started a movement on Cascavel-pm (which is historically used as the official mailing list for Brazilian Perl Mongers) to translate the articles in the Perl Advent Calendar for Brazilian Portuguese.

(ASIDE: Why Brazilian Portuguese? Well, we are Brazilians and we do not write Portuguese as our European comrades do. But I have no strong conviction on this and do not oppose to a more universal Portuguese translation with articles translated by any Portuguese writer. As the Perl community lives and grows with English documentation written by people of all countries with different English styles, so could we.)

To not repeat myself and because I'm pressed to go spend some time with family at a Sunday, I reproduce the message I've sent belg4mit and perladvent.pm.org collaborators about the rationale of the proposal.

Subject: Going multilingual

I just had an idea reading this entry on Catalyst 2005 Advent Calendar:

http://www.perlmonks.org/?node_id=516907

With the participation of the community, we foreigners could start an
effort to make the Perl Advent Calendar accessible to speakers of
other languages than English. The original articles (which have links
such as http://perladvent.pm.org/2006/1/) would have tiny bits
directing to other language versions (such as Brazilian Portuguese) in
links like http://perladvent.pm.org/2006/pt_br/1/.

If you find it feasible, I will start by calling Brazilian
contributors to translate the articles already published -- and try to
set a schedule to guarantee the others to come will have willing
contributors. I will explicitly say to them this is an impromptu idea
and that the O'Reilly offering does not extend to them. If the idea
looks fine to you, maybe we could have more communities joining to
translate to even more languages. In this case, it would be nice to
host the translated pages in the same server.

I think in every case, the starting point is the original HTML, only
translating the content. I will be responsible for editing the content
of the Brazilian texts. I am not sure this will work for every
language -- it is easier in our case, because we use the same latin
alphabet (modulo diacritical marks). Languages like Japanese and
Chinese may present difficulties I have not thought about it. But
maybe not.

Adriano.

DISCLAIMER: I had this idea right now. I am not sure I will be able to
find enough contributors to make it feasible. That's why we should
make it public only if a group of a particular language is capable to
translated the already published entries and to assemble an schedule
for the next ones.

belg4mit's reply was positive and details are to be settled (if the proposal actually becomes a reality).

I just made the call to Brazilian community yesterday (http://mail.pm.org/pipermail/cascavel-pm/2006-December/007691.html, in Portuguese) and I am waiting for the answer (which can be a "no", as this is still an answer). I finished the translation of the first article and asked for people to review it (if they feel so). It is here: http://ferreira.nfshost.com/perl/br-01.html

What do you think about it?

To clarify, the calendar is puplished under an open license, the details of which are available in the FAQ. We will also be happy to (and would indeed prefer to) host any translations on the same server, alongside the original English versions.
