I presume you mean automating system administration, and I know of a very good book called (oddly enough) `Automating Unix/Linux System Administration' - I don't have any of the other details, because it's been `borrowed' ever since I put it down on my desk before going to get a coffee...

The public libraries in the state of Georgia created their own automation package, called either Evergreen or Open-ILS (I'm not exactly clear on the distinction) as an open-source project, and it makes extensive use of Perl.
Sanity? Oh, yeah, I've got all kinds of sanity. In fact, I've developed whole new kinds of sanity. You can just call me "Mister Sanity". Why, I've got so much sanity it's driving me crazy.

Wow. First of all, does this sound like an assignment to anybody else? Not saying it is, just saying it sounds (well, reads) like one. Secondly, asking for info regarding using perl in automation is like asking for information regarding using a Toyota for transportation; that's kinda what it's for. It does certain things exceptionally well, and other programming languages do some of the same things and also other things exceptionally well.

Check cnc, looking for CNC-related modules. I'm sure you'll find something. Or you could check CPAN for APT related modules.

Define "enough". Enough for a report? Enough to periodically check for changes in Perl modules? Enough to turn a light on and off in response to a change in barometric pressure? Enough to manage a national ATC system?
