IIRC
shell>some -really -long -command \ -with -many -options
is actualy one line - the newline character is consumed and not part of the executed command.
compare
totomte@librics-tomte ~ $ echo "test eins" test eins
tomte@librics-tomte ~ $ echo "test\ eins" testeins
