sorry, i don't actually get what you're trying to achieve with this regexp. it only replaces one or more spaces with the expression "^[A-Z][0-9]". perhaps you meant this?! perl -i -pe 's/.//g' filename but i think the best way of doing this should be pileofrogs's idea. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "one who asks a question is a fool for five minutes; one who does not ask a question remains a fool forever." mk at rio dot pm dot org
