I think that you problem was lack of time? Sometimes our brain simply needs some time to "digest" stuff. You may understand things, but untill you start using them - you can't say you know them.
I mean, if you were already used to CGI::Application, there wouldn't be a - would it? Have you tried freelancing? Check out Scriptlance - I work there. For more info about Scriptlance and freelancing in general check out my home node.
