In a word, TIMTOWTDI. There are several different ways to interact with the shell using Perl. In addition, for your specific example, there are several ways to do that without relying on a shell. So, it sounds like maybe Perl is a good fit for your project/needs. Check Outside Links and Library for plenty of resources to get you started with Perl.
