I thought it would have been nice for ghenry to provide the text of, or a link to, a formal announcement of the release. So I went looking for one. Of course, use.perl has something that could qualify, in which brian_d_foy quotes the perl5 pumpking, nicholas clark:

nicholas writes "Perl 5.8.8 Release Candidate 1 has been uploaded to CPAN. . . ."

Now, that's all nice; but even nicer would be the original message from nick which brian_d_foy has quoted. But I'm not finding it. A google search finds only instances of quoting, like brian_d_foy's. And a search of the perl5-porters archive turns up nothing.

Anybody have any leads? Or does nick makes these announcements in private communications?

    Thanks...

From the perl5-porters mailing list (which is the Real Thing, the use.perl announcement comes after the fact):

It has actually been out for a while, it was just a question of giving the mirrors time to catch up.

I found that. That's not what brian_d_foy quoted. Thanks anyway.

I just approved the story for use.perl. I didn't write it, and I didn't quote anything. Nick submitted the story and wrote all of the content, and that is the original message. If you have questions about something I did, you can always just ask me directly to get the real story, rather than assigning blame where it doesn't belong or cooking up a conspiracy. If you have a question about something Nick did, you can ask him.

Thanks. My misunderstanding was about how news "stories" get submitted and approved by an editor, and subsequently posted under the editor's name.

True enough. Honestly, it just didn't seem a big enough deal to involve you, let alone nick. Sorry about that.
...rather than assigning blame where it doesn't belong or cooking up a conspiracy.
Neither of which I did, thankyouverymuch. I was just trying to figure out where that message of nick's came from. Ultimately the problem was my misunderstanding of how these "stories" get posted on use.perl, and for that I plead that it was an innocent and understandable mistake. Now, you could argue that I, as a use.perl account holder, should have known... But in fact I've never had to make use of the "submit a story" feature and was completely ignorant of its workings.

What? jdporter making false assumptions and then going off about them? Never!!

Yeah sorry jdporter, been up to my eyes today, hence my two really short and useless posts. I shouldn't have bothered, and let someone else do it. Sorry ;-)

      Gavin.
