I remember it well. There was a Slashdot article in 2000 (which I can't seem to find right now) about Erudil's Camel Code. I was so blown away by it that I decided to lurk around the site for a while, and I've been here since.

Now I can say, "Been there, done that, got the t-shirt".

The funny thing here is that I just received that shirt in the mail on friday...and if you're wondering I chose to get it in forest green :) I am also surprised at how much I visit perlmonks...I honestly feel at home here. Moreso, than anywhere else.

How you came about...

If I remember correctly I did a Google search, though I cannot remember the search criteria I used. I seem to recall scanning several referrences, and this one won out because it seemed most tolorant of beginners. I'm very glad I found it, though a few others may be less pleased ;)

I called out, "Ready about!", and a few moments later called, "Helm's alee!" while pushing the tiller hard to starboard. Quickly the boat came about and we took on a new course.

How I discovered PerlMonks was through reading posts to comp.lang.perl.misc. Upon visiting here, I discovered a site with helpful individuals, a site with personality, and a site that welcomed me.

During YAPC::Europe 2001 in Amsterdam I somehow ended up in a chinese restaurant together with a lot of perl people. It seemed to be a "perlmonks-BOF", whatever that is...

Anyway, while waiting for our main courses somebody said: "All saints stand up" and several people stood up. They then continued this game while counting from 10 backwards. I was last to stand up when somebody said "And who hasn't got an account".

I joined the day after (from the lab, as I didn't have wireless back then)

Hopefully I have atoned for my sins, since then.

I've used pearl here and there for years, but nothing serious. My current job put me in the position of trying to parse log files and after much aggravation with shell scripting, I decided to go for Perl. I'd been a consultant for years and after a long time of trying to marry different technologies, I've become dependant on google for technical solutions... good for getting things done quickly, but not good for learning anything other than bad habits.

One of my searches dumped me here and as I had opportunity to more than scratch the surface of a technology or language, I've spent more and more time here... much to everyone's chargrin :)

Speaking of... any Ottawa residents interested in reviving the Perl Mongers group?

I got wind of this site from the perl.com Website. I had Perl in my Linux distro, and had no idea how to make it go. Perl.com linked to here, and I found this to be the most useful resource for learning Perl. Not only do the monks here answer questions I have, they also ask questions that it never occurred to me to ask. That's just as important, IMNSHO.

I came here after I was given some Perl code to maintain. I figured if I was going to have to maintain this code I had better learn the lingo, so I did a search for "Perl tutorial" and found this place.

Since then, I've been berated, pushed over a waterfall and harrassed for the crimes of my namesake.

In various guises this question comes up fairly often here. A few of my past answers to related questions are to be found here, here and here.

The bottom line is that I can't quite remember how I found PerlMonks, but I have met up with some pretty neat and knowledgeable people here. At this stage I think I may be giving back slightly more than I'm getting, but I'm still learning a lot and don't see that stopping. I haven't yet met any other monks in person what with being at the far end of the world from most of you, but if you ever venture to New Zealand put Dunedin on your inventory and let me know you are comming.

Then one evening I was working late at the office and found myself stuck with one particular problem. Normally I would ask one of my cow-orkers for advice, but on this occassion there was nobody around. And then I remembered that my cow-orker had mentioned that PerlMonks would help out with Perl-related problems (well, duh!).

And so came my first post. That was only a few months ago, but I have no doubt that since then I have learned much much more about Perl (and the Perl community in general) than I had in the previous 3 years :)

Update: heh, I just noticed that domm posted his 100th node in this thread. And by co-incidence, this is also my 100th node :)

My first approach to Perl. How has been yours?

Briefly: [Pp]erl => clpmisc => PM. Because clpmisc had become too much of a time sink, and I had to leave it. So PM is now the time sink, but less so. Sort of...
;-)

At the time, I was on a project where work was sporadic, but one had to be seen to be at ones desk. So I got into the habit (pun intended) of spending time at perlmonks. This became a self reinforcing habit as I found so much that was new and interesting, and got help from so many smart people.

Finally, IIRC, I clicked on a homenode button, typed in the CB to explain, got into conversation, and got hooked there too.

She used to troll around here but once she realized she could not code, she went back to her WOW sites!

I first found the site in 2001, probably from google when I was reading "learning perl" .
Much later I was doing some windows perl programming so I signed in and asked this question because I was in a complete dead end.
I got such a great answer that I decided to hang out some more in the monastery !
