I actually think you've made a good point here. I just can't help but feel that a lot of the responses you have received wouldn't have been posted if you had been a touch more diplomatic about how you expressed it.
The way I understand your point is that if someone wants to volunteer for something like this and they are an "unknown" that they should take measures to ensure that their presentation is as near perfect as they can make it.
It seems to me this is like going to an interview. I wouldn't go to an interview dressed as I am today (unshaven and slightly scruffy), as the presentation would lose me the opportunity almost for sure. But I _will_ come to work as I am now dressed because I know that anybody who matters knows that what I look like is totally irrelevent to how valuable I am to the firm. Or in other words, I've already proved my value, so presentation is of minimal importance. Wheras in an interview im an unknown and thus the more superficial features carry more weight.
Someone I dont know who volunteers to maintain my modules is going to get a much better reception if they present themselves in a competent and professional manner than if they write me a mail in 7331 speak.
OTOH, being fairly poor at spelling myself I wouldnt hold it against someone, but I can see why someone might.
