Huh?!? Do I? Jokes apart, thank you for this superb node. But why didn't you make this into a tutorial, rather than a meditation?

    I did think about it. Two things persuaded me to post it as a meditation:

    1. The blurb for the tutorials section suggests that a would-be tutorial should initially be posted as a meditation.
    2. It doesn't fit any of the tutorial categories. It would even look out of place in other topics, I think.

      I think the Miscellaneous Perl Tutorials section might be appropriate, at least until such time as a "Perl Internals" section gets made. robin++
