A simple search for "programming language" on Google brings up Perl as the number 5 result. A search for Perl brings up the CPAN as the number 3 result, with the words "The Comprehensive Perl Archive Network" in the description. perldoc -q module has the word "CPAN" in the first paragraph a half-dozen times. I don't think anyone who cares to find Perl or the CPAN is going to have trouble finding it.
Perhaps I overestimate people's intelligence, but if you're willing and able to grok Perl itself, you're likely willing and able to expand an acronymn. | [reply]

As a long time (La)TeX aficionado, I find "CPAN" quite natural and appealing. I think it has a tendency to be reasonably familiar to people with some technical know how. In fact now we have CRAN as well, and who knows what else... in the "C*AN domain", that is. | [reply] |

We call it CPAN, because it's easy to type or say cpan.org.
But if you go to that page,
you'll see the real title
"Comprehensive Perl Archive Network"
in nice friendly letters, so the "erl" is not just implied.

Because, ultimately, CPAN is not your project, and not a Perlmonks project either.
Perhaps your idea is brilliant. So, why don't you just go out and implement your idea? How do you think CPAN started? Someone posted the idea on Perlmonks, and then it suddenly happened? No! Someone had an idea, and he just went out, did it, and said this is what I did, this is how you use it, feel free to use it or ignore it. And it became a hit.
So, go out and set up a "Perlan" or a "Perl Archives" or whatever. And since all modules on CPAN are freely distributable, you won't have a problem filling your archive. | [reply] |

Well ... I think "someone had an idea" is not precise. Looks to me like someone looked at CTAN and though it might be nice to have something like that for Perl :-)
BTW, there is no "TeX" in "CTAN" either.

Actually, no, don't go and set up a "Perlan". CPAN is the one, canonical module repository for perl. Let's keep it that way, it's one of the things that makes perl attractive.

Ooh there is no "Java" in "JDK". There is even less of "TCL" in "Tk", as the "T" in "Tk" doesn't even stand for "TCL".
Who cares. These terms are meaningful only to people actually interested in Java or TCL respectively. And that is good enough for me, and I think, good enough for anybody. | [reply] |

There is already a site called Perl Archive. A more interesting question is how will CPAN accomodate Perl6 code.
- will Perl6 code live on CPAN at all? There is already a Perl6:: namespace for Perl5 code that emulates Perl6. Maybe perl6.cpan.org?
- will the Perl6 archive be totally new? What would it be called? 6Pan? C6PAN? CP6AN? CPAN6? DeepPan?
