How famous is XAMPP?

I have just recommended XAMPP to an OP at Re: Perl on laptop running Win 2000 Pro. XAMPP is a readymade Apache, MySQL, PHP and Perl package for various OSes. I have used it for various projects in the past and I am, as others very confident with it.

The first time I noticed XAMPP was on a CD that came with my fav. computer magazine. I always had the impression, that it would be an world wide know project, but today I stumbled about the sites country statistics and saw that germany ist at the first position, far behind the US and the rest is unimportant.

What about you? Did you know about XAMPP?

I knew about it, but I can't remember how I ever stumbled upon it. I tried it a few times and I must admit it is very well done: installation is a breeze and it works "out-of-the-box. Esp. for windows-users, it is the easiest way to get a mod_perl enabled Apache server running and if you really want it you can have Tomcat and Cocoon working as well just by downloading some additional packages and running the installer. The only reason I don't use it anymore is because Komodo doesn't recognize the Perl which it installs as a genuine "ActiveState" Perl and therefore refuses to run ppm with it. Maybe you should try XAMMP Lite. It comes with Apache, PHP, MySQL and a few other things ~~but not Perl~~. You can have your own ActiveSate Version of Perl running next to it. Update: Sorry, I didn't notice that there is a mini Perl version included. Just the Perl executable. And why are there so many german users? It's because apachefriends.org is a german page. I tried XAMPP a few times, it was quite good, but now that I know how to install my own "AMP" stack, I can fine-tune it better. I've seen similar packages fly by in the past and it always looked ok for the neighbour's kid with an old Win32 machine and some half-decent ADSL connection who wanted to create some FrontPage-messed-up websites about his 1337 computer game clan. Besides that, I can't see why these packages would be chosen over the regular ways to install software (be it apt-get, rpm, emerge or anything else.) Then again, I must admit not having looked at this xampp too long. -- b10m All code is usually tested, but rarely trusted.	[reply]

It's a nice package if you're developing on a win32 machine. Especially if you have the click - install mindset. Why anyone would want to use a win32 machine for software development, I don't know, but I've met a few that do :-) "What should it profit a man, if he should win a flame war, yet lose his cool?"
