Why don't you use the stock standard tar utility? Ok, I mean there are multiple versions of the tar program, but I am talking about the latest version of gnu tar.

You can do something along the lines of:

`tar -zcvf $archive.$year$month$day.gz /home/reports/ftp/WSB/*$year$mo
+nth$day*`
[download]

It does. -z compresses. `-z --gzip --gunzip Filter the archive through gzip(1).` [download]	[reply] [d/l]
