data67 has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I just had a terrable time with a hosting service that claimed that they had good service for Perl etc. but did not deliver. Avoid WestHost.com at all costs (if you intend to do any Open Source/C/PERL type work). I was wondering if anyone out there can recomend a good and RELIABLE web hosting service provider that has good PERL/DBI/MySQL support. I do not want to pay an arm and a leg for the serivce either. I am sure you guys understand. Any recomendations will be greatly appreaciated. Thanks, dd

Yup, it is an OT, but, for the record, we've recently moved about a dozen clients to the host of the Monastery and are pretty happy. Very Perlish.

Depending on the needs of the site (is it a professional site? Minimum uptime, etc.) why not give a shot at hosting it yourself? If you have a cable or dsl internet connection (where you can be connected at all times), you can register a domain name and use one of the many dynamic dns services (I personally use dyndns) for name resolution. The rest would be a matter of installing and configuring the necessary software (apache, perl, mysql, etc). It's not as difficult as it may sound. However, the maintenance and security of the site is another matter :) Also, I guarantee you will learn a lot in the process.

What exactly was wrong with WestHost.com?

Anyway just like there are tons of webhosts, there are tons of web host review sites.

    http://www.webhostmagazine.com/
    http://www.hostreview.com/
    http://www.10-cheapwebhosting.com/
    http://www.web-hosting-top.com/web-hosting/directory

That's just a few I found on google.

I have three different webhosts I use for most of my stuff, but they're all focused on PHP or (heaven forbid) ASP. One of them does support Perl, but I'm sure I'll get down voted if I post the referal link. If you're intersted, PM me and I'll send you the referal link.

Finally, I'd suggest you at least check out the folks who advertise on perlmonks -- pair.com

I have used pair.com for years and I've been VERY satisfied with them. They aren't the cheapest game in town, but paying a few extra bucks a month is worth the comfort of knowing that my sites are being handled by professionals.

My only complaint has been that they have no plan to offer/support Rails, which I've been quite interested in for the past few months.

Dreamhost & Textdrive seem like nice hosts too, which offer PHP, Perl and MySQL (and RoR).
