Caught between these voices
the sirens and the sage
one too many choices
for the victims of the age

    -- Mark Heard 1951-1992
My body, like a Roman ruin,
shudders in the storm.
It is not unlike my life:
a heap of schemes and projects
that lie crumbled on the ground.
But like Hadrian's Wall
I'm still standing ...

Some interesting language comparison papers:

The day I met Larry Wall:

I was at the first YAPC (Yet Another Perl Conference) as a speaker. My name and the abstract for my paper appeared in the Proceedings, and the abstract noted that I work at an aerospace laboratory.

It was lunchtime on the first day; Larry had given the keynote address that morning. I saw him sitting alone at a table and went over to introduce myself saying: "Hi Larry, my name is Steve Jenkins". His somewhat puzzling response was: "You're not the Steve Jenkins I was expecting".

If you have the first Camel book (the pink one) you'll see 'Steve Jenkins' listed in the thank-you section. That SJ had worked with Larry at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Larry explained that he had lost touch with him, but after seeing the name and the associated mention of the aerospace industry, he had jumped to the wrong conclusion.

Larry invited me to sit and have lunch with him and we had a great conversation for about 20 minutes before anyone else sat down with us.

Needless to say, it made my day!

Perlmonks is a strange beast.
It's largely a newbie-help site,
but also contains a handful of
Things of Terrifying Beauty
