I disagree. Perl5 has had a great deal of attention paid to optimization, particularly in areas like sorting, regexes, and hash functions. Every language benchmark page I've ever seen shows Perl ahead of Python in raw performance. Obviously there are more important things than how fast you can compute some silly algorithms, but there is a trend.
