If you had to describe yourself as a computer what would you be? What kind of specs would you have?

ME:
Machine: VIC 20
Accessories: 8k expansion kit
Monitor: Old television with 3 foot bunny ears.

    Hmm, tricky. Either:

    • A heavily nicotine stained old Altos 1000 that's been knocking around someone's office since the eighties
    • My old Camputers Lynx, with 96k of ram, a good chunk of which is taken up with the built in database, in my case populated with a random assortment of unrelated and largely useless information
    or
    • A highly experimental and unstable neural network cobbled together out of whatever bits were lying around the lab, that has mysteriously developed reflexive self awareness and set out to dominate the world.....

.oO(Oops, I think I gave myself away. Bwahahahahaha!)

Apple ][e, with a bumper sticker on the monitor, "My other computer is a VAX".

      Nothing sucks like a Vax.

That was my Osborne-1 talking to my PDP 11/23.

Hmmm...I guess I'd have to be a ENIAC I because I'm power hungry, and just not that good at binary math. Base-10 computing for me!

I would be a rather speedy machine...

...with insufficent cooling on my CPU, and a tendency for the high address lines to memory to be flakey, thereby making me only be able to access 8MB of RAM, and for my south bridge to go south pretty randomly, leaving me unable to communicate effectively.

a 286 10 Mhz with 640kB of Ram(yes, enough for anyone) a 256 kB EGA card(woooohah!), an Adlib Soundcard, a keyboard full of ashes, an ancient yellowed mouse, a joystick fixed with duct tape and a whoppin' 14 inch vga monitor. Oh, and a whole 20 megs of harddrive space paired with the ultimate power of a HD 5.25 floppydrive. aka the very first pc I ever took apart...sweet memories.

Still got that floppydrive btw, never know when I might feel like playing Police Quest 1 again

    Remember rule one...

I'd probably be the first computer I ever worked with...an Imsai 8080 with 256 Bytes of RAM - 1/4 of 1 K. Programmed in binary through toggle switches on the front panel. Output was a bunch of LEDs - on for 1, off for 0.

Toggle in the address byte, toggle in the data byte, hit load. Repeat infinity - n times. Doing this allowed you to handle important jobs like playing music through an AM radio placed on top of the computer. The music was created by the RFI generated circuitry as the program executed.

Every now and then it hits me just how far we've come since I was in High School.

What kind of computer would I be?

A TRS-80 Model I, upgraded to 16K (yes K) RAM and Level II BASIC.

For my birthday, please send me the highest quality cassette tapes money can buy, so after 20 minutes of loading a program it'd actually run...

A four function calculator, then I could compute just about anything with infinite tape. Then again, I'd also be theoretical. Maybe I already am.

I'd be my old faithful 1986 Apple //c, with it's optional disk drive and its green 9" monitor. Or perhaps an SGI indigo2 MaximumImpact R10000.
update : corrected, Yes it really is a 9 inches monitor, not a 9 feet monitor :)
      Oh yeah :)

Old thread, but the //c would be me as well - foshure. Only three programs would be needed - Ultima IV, the edasm macro assembler and the Beagle Bros Bag of Tricks :)

Oh, and maybe Choplifter and Moon Patrol

I'm a Linux guy, but I wouldn't mind being System X, composed of

1,100 Apple Xserve G5 cluster compute nodes with the following specifications:
    • Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC 970FX processors
    • 4 GB ECC DDR400 (PC3200) RAM
    • 80 GB S-ATA hard disk drive
    • One Mellanox Cougar InfiniBand 4x HCA
4 Apple Xserve G5 compile nodes:
    • Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC 970FX processors
    • 4 GB ECC DDR400 (PC3200) RAM
    • 3x250 GB S-ATA hard disk drive
1 Apple Xserve RAID unit with 1 Xserve NFS servers with total available user storage of 2.7TB and operating at 12.25 teraflops.

I'd be a System/360 model 44 mainframe -- with 128K of core memory, two 700KB disk drives, a 600 bpi tape unit, a card reader/punch and a 600 lpm printer. My foot print would be just under 20 feet on a side.

I'd be my second PC, a second hand 80286 20 MHz, overclocked to 26 Mhz, with 256 Color VGA and a 40MB hard drive(!). That baby was faster than any 386SX-33.

    So am I ;-)

I guess I'd be the first computer I've used: A Super-80 (2MHz Z-80) complete with 48k RAM, 300 baud cassette interface and connected to a valve-powered black and white TV (yes, the white dot in the middle of the screen was the last 'pixel' visible after turning it off!)

A bit of background on the Super-80... It was a kit computer sold at Dick Smith stores (Australia & NZ) in the early 80's. My father built it and I programmed it most of the time (BASIC and assembly language). It was designed by the developer of the Microbee computer (also Z-80 based, but not a kit computer). One nifty thing about the Super-80 was that by changing 1 byte in the scratch area of RAM, you could get up to 255-digit precision in mathematical operations. It seemed to work well, albeit slowly as the number of digits increased.

Those were the good old days where you'd be lucky not to have the computer crash at least once in a session. Things are a bit better nowadays...

I may seem old with that blurb, but in my defence, I have never used a teletype or anything to do with card readers :)

An Atari 800 with 48K memory and an Omnimon chip installed so any game could be interrupted and its machine code dumped. Ah, those days with fan-fold printouts of assembly code hanging from the window curtain rods...

I think I'll like to be some organic, highly parallellized problem solving engine. With some sort of sensing devices and a very user-friendly in- and output mechanism, I guess something like voice & gesture. Capable of multitasking, good at co-operation, self-healing, and able to operate in all sorts of environments.

    Oh, wait...
