by neophyte (Curate)
on Nov 22, 2000 at 14:29 UTC ( [id://42899]=perlmeditation: print w/replies, xml ) Need Help??

Today we have an occasion to honour our fellow monk merlyn.

He has helped many of us, may he be able to continue to do so for a long time.

All the best to him and

Happy Birthday, merlyn

    #!/usr/bin/perl -w use strict; for (1..4) { print "Happy Birthday "; $_ % 3 ? print "to you\n" : print "dear [merlyn]\n"; }

I'll be celebrating by picking up a new copy of _Effective Perl Programming_ :)

I've gotta say, that's mildly disturbing. =] On a related note, happy birthday merlyn!

      -marius
I'm glad I didn't try to obfuscate it then :-)

There's no sense in making merlyn even think about working on his birthday ;)

    Happy Birthday, merlyn

You've been a valuable resource to many of us - and that's not just limited to PM.

Here's a short list of others who were born on November 22:

    • 1964 Stephen Geoffreys
    • 1961 Mariel Hemingway
    • 1958 Jamie Lee Curtis
    • 1943 Billie Jean King
    • 1932 Robert Vaughn
    • 1921 Rodney Dangerfield
    • 1913 Benjamin Britten
    • 1899 Hoagy Carmichael
    • 1890 Charles de Gaulle
Looks like you're in good company.

    Cheers!

    Mick
Yeah, there's my twin, Mariel Hemingway, with whom I've exchanged birthday greetings and autographed items (an autographed copy of the Llama went to her husband Steven)!

    Happy birthday merlyn!

Armed with your book Learning Perl and a 12 pack of Mountain Dew I'm hoping to maintain my sanity amid the fury and bustle of 13 cousins, two pairs of uncles and aunts, grandparents, siblings, two dogs, ~10 cats, two horses, three drumsticks (weird turkeys in these parts. Never move to a place where the water company's name is MUD), 8 pies, 6 side dishes, 70 cookies and a camel in a pear tree.

Thanks for all of your contributions to the perl community, both here and elsewhere. May you continue to find joy in throwing perls before camels.

And no, I don't own 27 pairs of sweatpants.

    HAPPY Birthday,

all the best to you - health, wealth and "victory over the black hole". All the very best to you.
Shall you have on every day some small event that makes you smile and realize how nice life is.
And as this is the chance to do:
Thank you for teaching me through your books, your columns, your writeups here.
I'm proud being able to say that I learned from you.
"The audience is with you" :-)

    Have a nice day

    Happy Birthday merlyn!!!
Hope you have a really good, relaxing and pleasant day out there!
I guess it's a good time to actually say a "Thank you" for all the time that you've put in to this site, and Perl in general!
Perhaps this should be declared a Perl Monks holiday day in celebration.. :)
But most of all, I hope that it's a day you get time to unwind from the world at large, and just get the time to reflect on that which you would wish to think back on with a smile, and think on to all the good things yet to come.

    Malk.

How about a Happy birthday, merlyn from the Netherlands, too?!

I may have communicated the following before ;-).... My first encounter with the language perl was the pearl "Learning perl". (I hope it wasn't pearls for the swines....) It was really a joy to read! For that, my perlmonky gratitude!!!

    Perlish greetings and regards,
and thanks a lot (no reference to them fishes today ;-),

Happy Birthday!! I think you should spend it with Mariel Hemingway!! :)

I just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration to improve my perl skills.

    Have a great birthday!

Update: Why would someone down vote a birthday wish? That's pretty sad! I could understand not voting for it, since it's not exactly perl related, but to down vote it? Oh well.
Wow! Congratulations, you've sucessfully (echo-y announcer voice here) GONE ONCE MORE AROUND THE SUN!

        =) Hapyy-Bday.

Tanjyoubi ni tanoshinde! I apologize, my Japanese is terrible. But happy birthday from Japan, and here's hoping I actually get to use this little Perl thing again soon and learn from some of your fine work. ;)

Mazal Tov (Happy Bday the jewish way... ;) ) Merlyn! I think this node will out-repute all other ones ever posted, but you're worth it!
Thanks for everything, for being such a great contribution to the perl society...
And, in repayment for the help you've given us all, newbies and saints alike, may you be granted all of your wishes!
