Watching a thread

Greetings fellow monks,

I was just thinking...it would be nice to be able to be notified of updates to threads of your choosing. Currently, it's possible to manually watch newest nodes for the node title, but that breaks because the author of a reply has the power to change the title on her node to be completely unrelated to the original. The update could be similar in nature to when someone replies to one of your own nodes; you'd just get a little personal message in the chatterbox. I don't even know if this is original, but I thought it might be useful. What does everyone think?

Well, if you use Recently Active Threads instead of Newest Nodes then you can't be fooled by the title changing. As for more sophisticated tracking noone as ever really worked out the details well enough for it to be implemented.

    thor,
This isn't the first time this has come up. I even contributed Working Node Tracker?, but it didn't quite fit the bill. I was about 80% of the way done with a new version when life took over and it took a back seat. I have never gotten back around to it. The biggest problem is being able to tell when the content of a pre-existing node changes without being too much of a resource hog. There is no way to know, to my knowledge, if a node has changed without doing some sort of a checksum.

If you just want to know when there are new posts to a thread, demerphq is right - use Recently Active Threads.

    Cheers - L~R
