From what I understand, Class::DBI needs a existing data-model to derive its classes from while HDB does not impose that constraint. At least, that was one of the constraints of Class::DBI when I looked at it, which has been a while ago.

Indeed it is Class::DBI::Loader that provides the functionality I was talking about. Nevertheless, Class::DBI (and its derivatives) still need an existing data-model. Ad hoc modifications of the data-model is not supported by Class::DBI.

SInce Class::DBI allows __PACKAGE__->db_Main->do( $sql );, and indeed __PACKAGE__->db_Main->anyDBImethod();, there is very little it won't support.
