Well I changed the age ranges and added a slot for 36-39 making the results even less useful.

I would've guessed the Perl Monks as group were younger! Not sure why I had this impression... the youthful energy and zest of the gang, perhaps? So, who claims the title of youngest Perl Monk? Oldest? Who claims the highest posts-to-years ratio? Interesting, interesting, interesting!
So, who claims the title of youngest Perl Monk?

      I think it's either zdog or mt2k. I don't know for sure but I'm guessing they're around 15 (I'm 16).

I probably do, then. See my reply to the original poll.

Update: See update / "hey!" at ar0n's node below.

Uhm, what about...?

Where do 36 to 39 year olds vote?

      They don't matter.

There was a point where I was old for my age. Now I'm young for my age. Does that mean that I just have some constant factored in, and I passed it?

As long as my warrenty doesn't expire, I'm happy.

Well, based on a sample of 45 responses, I see that you youngsters are in the majority. There's got to be more of us that are approaching the half century mark.....

Maybe I qualify for youngest monk. I'm only 14. (15 in January)

... apparently undefined! Why not a 36-39 group?

I guess this makes me timeless though...

Update 1: Will that teach me to respond before reading the thread? Probably not!

Update 2: ... and now fixed so quickly I shouldn't have even commented. Blame it on the instant gratification culture of the 'net! This wouldn't have happened if we all submitted replies on punched cards! Now where's that nurse with my colonic...

I'm getting old, I just turned 30 and I picked 30-35 instead of 25-30. Oh well, at least gray hair is better than no hair.

    Oh so very funny!

Why did this poll have to start 3 days after my birthday, and why did you have to ask for a 36 and + category to be added when I just turned 36?

    Oh why?

THat said, I'm glad to see a fair number of grey bearded monks here (and even more glad that my wife is an avid reader of cadfael novels, hence she likes my grey beard ;--)

Maybe the reason there aren't as many of us greybeards is that many of us passed through high school and college without ever having the chance to take a programming course.

At my location (University of Missouri) there are a number of old farts like me who are largely self-taught, and an even larger number of younger programmers and sysadmins who grew up dreaming in (insert language of choice here).

They do keep us on our toes, though. I have learned a lot from working with some of the recent graduates.

Yes, and I also like the Cadfael mysteries, as does my wife. The first series of PBS Mystery! videos was pretty good, but the later series have been a little disappointing.

Now there's another potentially interesting poll topic - how many people here have had formal programming training?

In (civil) engineering school we had none, but there was an amusing pass/fail course in 2nd year in which each week you had 3 hours to write a program (on an Apple II) to implement some trivial calculation (e.g. plotting the bending moment diagram for a bridge as a truck passes over it). While I'd been fiddling with computers for years by then, the majority found it very difficult, and I still fail to see what it was to achieve apart from making neophytes into computerphobes.

I also recall a course in first year that had us doing a bit of Fortran IV on a PDP-11 via VC-404s, and from my observation it was just a way to justify new terminals as my classmates pretty well destroyed those 404s out of rage over the term.

(my hair is greying but my moustache ain't - go figure)

(ob. Cadfael comment: now replaying on CBC at midnight IIRC, great fun!)

Heh.. :) Well, assuming this poll has a lifespan of more than 5 days, my category's going to change...
Posted in the 26-30 category, and only just made it there by a whisker...
Guess I'll get to post in the 20-25 next.. :)

The strength of youth will overcome the wisdom of age... or is that the other way around?
No matter as long as I dont have a colostomy bag :)
    p.s. I turned 19 as of 10/15/00

The 23-25 bracket is odd, I wonder why there is such a sharp drop off while the two around it are way higher?

    .:. Ioa Aqualine Petra'ka

It is because the the 26-30 range is wider (covers more years) than the 23-25 range. If we divide each number of responses by the number of years in that range (skipping the top and bottom entries), then we get the following:

      9-11 X 0.3 12-16 XXXXXXXXX 3.6 17-19 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX 15.3 20-22 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-25.3-XXX 23-25 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX 18.3 26-30 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX 14.8 31-35 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX 7.4 36-40 XXXXXXXXXXXX 4.8 41-45 XXXX 1.6 46-50 XX 0.8 51-60 | 0.2
which is missing the dip in the middle that bothered you.

    12 as of now.
Kudos to you then. I know when I was <non-offensive age>, Visual Basic (long forgotten) and HTML && Javascript were "my thing". I was <non-offensive age + 1> when I first installed Linux (slack). Then again, Linux installs have been getting easier :-)

Oh God, I feel old. Bring back the nineties! Times were better then! Prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders!

hey! What's so offensive? If you don't agree with me, downvote and reply. Don't be lazy. I have xp to spare, I'm just curious.

update: I've deleted any reference to an age, in order to not offend anyone...

      [ar0n]

Visual Basic... hmm. I think it was three or so years back when I learned VB, and about six years ago when I learned just plain B(ASIC). HTML and JS I can do OK, but not expertly.

I really should install Linux, or another one of the free Unixen, on my machine... but, unfortunately, I have an obscure (read: unsupported) video card which won't work without the latest X, and since I'm 12, I'm not exactly free to just go and get the latest distribution. I could theoretically download it, but my Net connection is currently a 56k modem. Fortunately I have a good high-speed connection through the university, and some CD-Rs. Maybe I can fetch it through one of the labs on campus into a CD-R and use that.

Of course, then there's also C(++), (Emacs) Lisp, Perl (obviously), Java, and bits of sed, sh, VRML, Z80 ASM, TI C, TI-Basic...
