Employers who make applicant processing decisions based on the letters that the applicant places after his/her name, as opposed to a real analysis of knowledge, skills and abilities, get what they deserve. Many software developers look great on paper, but put them behind a keyboard and it's a disaster.

I agree that qualifications on paper are nothing compared to actual skill and being able to get the job done.
However... Qualifications on paper can get you into the door at which point you can impress upon potential employers your actual skill and ability to get said job done.
