You might want to take a look at Deterministic Finite Automata. I have not used this in perl, but the concept is simple and logical, and avoids a lot of programming errors - config errors are discovered and corrected easier than hard-coded condition errors. Offense, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, and a fantasy.
